1.5 nze
195/65/15"
I put 15's so my doors wouldn't hit pavement when opened
so I probably get more as my car is running bigger diameter wheels

I would LOVE to know how they "cleaned" baked-on carbon build-up from an O2 sensor.
If you understand how it got deposited there, you'll know there's no solvent ever invented that can clean it.

And the fact that a supposedly self-cleaning heated sensor had carbon build-up in the first place, means your overfueling problem CAUSED the sensor to become like that and NOT the other way around.

x2...can't see how you can "clean" an O2 sensor? Well, looking at it in an isolated POV, they should have swapped the sensor with another to see at least how the voltage/other readings varied when driving.

I'd imagine the "firm" would have test driven the car after repair?

I've been getting poor gas mileage on my 2007 1.5 1NZ Corolla. When I use Super I get and average of 21MPG and with Premium 25MPG and overall average per tank of 228 miles (about 367KM).

That's rough  I average about 20-21 mpg with my WRX...premium of course (and that's a 2.0Turbo for crying out loud).

Right now I'm thinking that the VVT solenoid may be stuck.
Does the car pull like it used to? Or is it lazy?
The VVT solenoid oil pasages are very small, and prone to getting clogged if oil changes arent on time, or too thick an oil is being used.
Have a good mechanic check it out.

Excessive Fuel Consumption - 1.5 1NZ- Engine

Postby tnr18 » April 1st, 2010, 11:44 am

Hi Everyone - So I fueled up the car on Sunday and this time I used a gas treatment so my usual gas bill went from approximately $110.00 to $136.00. However, interestingly the mileage improved significantly. My last quoted mileage was approximately 380 @ $119.00.

With this tank of fuel I got a total of 468Km @ 136.00. So for an average of $37.00 dollars more I got an additional 88KM. The math of the equation isn't a drastic improvement but it's an improvement all the same.

Hook wrote:If you can, have a good mechanic check plugs, air filter, clean the injectors and physically inspect the O2 sensor without making it look like u tampered with anything and check the difference in your economy.

This is what that fuel treatment prolly did.
Dirty injectors can have a poor spray pattern or even drip, causing excessive fueling, hence the reason a full check and injector clean was initially suggested.
You can't always trust the firm to do what you're paying them to do.

Glad u got the fix in a bottle instead of paying someone to pull the injectors and manually clean them. You just saved a bunch of cash. 8-)

Which fuel treatment did u use BTW? It might help other NZE drivers with the same problem.

Still terrible for an NZE...
Use a full bottle of Redline SI-1, arguably the best fuel system cleaner available.
If its injector related... redline will do the magic.

sorry guys. i now noticed how far this thread has gone! Yes hook we have the NZE141 with stock rims/tyres. They are 195/65/R15.

what i notice is that if we used premium we get better mileage. Up to figures like 400-420. I wish we could afford premium

anyway, we are due for a service as well. TBH, we do not wish to return to the fcking stealership bs service. I will always rant about their shittyness. Our Evap. is going and the fckers changed the cabin filter and didnt bother to pressure test anything. Also, last service, their work cloth fcuked up our bumper :|

I really dont expect much from a company like that and when one complains they shrug it off.

Sorry about the rant, back to the issue, tnr18, as said before bro, what cleaner/treatment you used?

And it's good to see a healthy discussion in Toyota Forums.

My 2 cents - I have a 1.6 nze and always fill my tank at the quarter mark - it takes approx $100 super or $140 premium from this level and then zero the odometer at every fill up. For $100 super the 'mileage' varies between 300km and 400km depending on drive conditions. On 'long' Mayaro runs the mileage is excellent even though I drive with a heavy foot  . Rush hour traffic to POS and back the average is 300 k's dropping to 290 when the injectors need cleaning. When doing a cleaning run I fill up with Premium and use Redline full fuel system cleaner (name?)

One thing i am not seeing here is what tire air pressures your running on car ... if these are too low it can have a negative impact on gas milage.

Excessive Fuel Consumption - 1.5 1NZ- Engine

Postby tnr18 » April 3rd, 2010, 12:03 pm

timothymcdavid - The currently has 215/60/14 Nexen tires Nitrogen filled and runnig a tire pressure of 28lbs.

Big Z - The car is not lazy it responds well so I'm not sure but thank for the heads up on the VVT solenoid, I'll add it of the list of things to check.

corolla_2nr & neoise & Hook - The fuel additive I used was; P.i. Performance Improver Gasoline Additive and it improved the mileage by approximately 98Km/tank of fuel.

I need air pressure as well, our pressure is a tad low.

Excessive Fuel Consumption - 1.5 1NZ- Engine

Postby tnr18 » April 14th, 2010, 11:42 am

Hi Everyone,

So the gas mileage has been improving on the car gradually. I filled up twice recently and used an; Amsoil P.i. Performance Improver Gasoline Additive and each time I got 468KM and 477Km for $115.00.

i use the redline si-1 in my 2006 local 1.5 nze and never have to clean the injectors. The car is overdue for a service and at 125000kms still gives 440kms per 100 dollars super gas.
Oddly, my mpg decreases with premium.

Other things:
1. I stopped servicing in TTTL since 2007.
2. installed K+N drop in filter.
3. Stock plugs
4. Redline treatment 1/4 bottle every month or so.
5. Royal Purple 10w30 oil, to switch to 15w40 next service.

6. 205/50/16 toyo proxes t11, always at 30 psi and wheels always aligned

local, nze, everthing stock, doin over 60,000 kms - gettin 500kms with $100 super

economy will be affected by the following:

1. Driving style
2. tyre pressure

driving at high speed with all windows down will also have a negative effect

Well we serviced this weekend gone. First time not directly at TTTL but from a guy who does the service in the branch. Car working great. Will monitor Usage this time. I will check tire pressure as well.

I will also check out that amsoil additive.

thanks

Dude your issue sounds real strange.

I have a foreign used 2002 NZE 1.5. It came with 175/70/14 tyres and I used to get 550- 600 km per tank of Super gas. I used to use the Redline that came in the bottle with the red label. That was the good one.

I changed my 14 tyres to 17's and the car start to burn gas I only getting 390-410 km now. Take my advice DO NOT put bigger rims on your car. I wanna get rid of them and go to 15's.
I say do a full service on your car by an independent mechanic.

By the way the stock tyre size for the NZE is 185/70/14.

Let us know what TTTL doing to fix it.

Just an update,
Thinking this car is whack.
We usually fill with Premium sometimes. Did this ever happen to anyone?
Filled it, drove off and the guage read that it was under half tank. Even the Range was wrong. Until the next day, then it read correct.

To the above, That's for your model, this is the NZE141. But thanks man.

I believe we may have sh!tty plugs as we are noticing a slight drop in rev intermittently, not when the a/c compressor kicks in. We did our last service by another mech.
