Who is up for a challenge?

I want to learn to drop the gearbox and change my clutch. Who can teach me. I'm offering a case of beers and some cutters.

If someone is willing to teach and others wanna learn we can make it into a lil lime an all. I jus wanna learn to do it myself.

I smell gas fumes coming from the engine bay when i am driving on the high way

its a 20vbt. have been experiencing this problem for some time. wondering if i should change over the gas lines, recently the O2 sensor went, so thats not working currently, but was gettin the fumes even when it was working. Or i cud be not sure if it was ever working. I know for i sure i am burning rich.

any suggestions as to why the fumes

A faulty O2 sensor would cause excessive fuel consumption, but hardly likely to the extent that you'd smell it in the engine bay, unless it's dumping fuel like crazy and you've a leaky exhaust.

I'd change the fuel lines and put new hose clamps to ease my mind if I were you. Have the engine bay completely cleaned as well so you could monitor it afterward.
I've seen a 20V burnt to a crisp because of leaky fuel lines (all sensors and electricals totally melted), so don't let it happen to you. If the problem persists, make a VERY careful inspection (check FPR and return lines as well) for any signs of leakage.

A faulty O2 sensor will likely be the cause of this, provided the coolant temperature sensor, ignition timing and everything else is okay. However, the ECU will not throw an error code for it unless the heater in the sensor is shot, the sensor itself may simply be on the way out and the heater element may be fine, which'll increase your fuel consumption but won't trigger an error code. If the heater element is gone, the Check Engine Light will stay on for a bit when you start up and then turn off, but the code will still be stored.

You can check for yourself.

I am having the same exact problem, burning a ridiculous amount of gas, right now im spending more on gas than on beers. anyways i took it to get a scan, the guy said that nothing showing up wrong, but that it could be the sensor.
but i cannot afford to be driving this car until its properly fixed, so who can i check fellas?

The 4A-GE 20V burns a more gas than it's econobox 1.6L counterparts, even if all sensors are in proper working order. This is something all 20V owners should come to accept.

Here's how to check your O2 sensor yourself:

http://4age20v.blogsome.com/ wrote:Good day…

This is a very simple step by step on how to check your O2 sensor whether it is in good working condition or need a change. If you have not get yours check, please read on. If you already get yours checked and feel that this post is boring, then please jump to the following links: Girls of The Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia

Here you go ~

1) Turn off your engine

2) Locate your diagnostic connector, and look for terminal “OX1″ and “E1″

3) Get an analog multi meter (any brand can do)

4) Select to 2.5Vdc range

5) Insert the red colour probe to “OX1″, and black colour probe to “E1″

6) Place the multi meter on the windscreen, as near to the driver side as possible

7) Start your engine

8) Wait till it reach working temperature

9) Keep your RPM at 2500

10) Observe you multi meter’s needle. It should be moving up and down, from 0 to 2/5 of full scale.

11) Time your watch, a good O2 sensor will move the needle up and down for at least 8 times in 10 sec.

If your needle move less than 8 times per 10 sec, or idle at any scale, your O2 is dead.

hi guys, i was going to create a new thread on an issue i am having, but i saw the 4age comprehansive thread.
as many of you know, i compete in solodex in this car:

Image

its fitted with a blacktop 4AGE coupled to a T50 gearbox, rear wheel.

Image

problem is, we have an automatic harness and ECU. i am looking for a m/t ECU and harness. the present setup creates problems since the check light is always on; the ECU is always looking for the speed sensor.

any help is appreciated

Speed sensor is supposed to be up regardless of harness. It's a 3 wire sensor. I'm not absolutely certain but the T50 box uses a cable speedo, not so? You'll hafta post a pic of the speedo unit for me to know if it can be swapped with the electronic sensor.

yes the t50 is cable. the speedo unit is an escort speedometer since the car originally had an escort engine.

i am trying my best to figure out this speed sensor thing. Hook, you are the third person to tell me the above, but four others have advised differently. they say a speed sensor is not applicable in the gearbox 4AGE.

Hook wrote:The vehicle speed sensor needs to be connected to both the speedo (for obvious reasons) AND the ECU as a feedback signal. After 8seconds of driving between 2000rpm to 6000rpm without any VSS signal being detected by the ECU, the CEL switches on to indicate that the ECU is operating in a safe mode and as a result, redline is reduced from 8200rpm to somewhere in the 7000rpm neighbourhood.

The electronic speed sensor on MOST Toyotas have 3 wires, all red in colour with a distinguishing stripe on each.
Red-Blue = +12V (IGN)
Red-Green = earth
Red-Yellow = signal <---There's the wire u want

If you are unsure, switch the ignition on and test the three wires, one will read battery voltage, one will have no potential (earth) and by process of elimination, the other is your signal.

The trick at that point is to simply trace back the wire through the harness (a Multimeter is important here) and connect it to the VSS input, which on the pre-May 1993 ECU is the 9th pin from the left on the top row (labelled SPD) and on the post-May 1993 ECU is the 3rd pin from the left on the top row (labelled SP1).

Once this is done, simply clear the error codes by removing the ECU fuse for about 10-15 seconds. Start the car and let it idle for a couple fan cycles and u good to go.

No problem meng. Now the ECU pinouts I quoted above are for the Silvertop ECU.
The Blacktop pin IIRC is the 3rd pin from the left on the top row of the rightmost socket (facing the ECU) labelled "SP1"...the colour code of the wire escapes me ATM.

I'm not certain if this holds for all 20V ECUs, but if you open them, the pinouts are marked on the circuit board anyway, so you can check for yourself if you're unsure.

i'm about to try using an apexi rsm to get around the speed sensor cause its somewhat annoying cause sometimes it will cause the check light to come on and sometimes it doesn't.

Blacktop and 2nd Gen Silvertop VVL is TPS dependent (over 40% throttle) once the coolant temperature is at least 50*C.

Your problem could be a gearbox issue. What gearbox are you using?

the ideal time for ur vvt to engage would best be seen on a dyno chart, however the good ole 'butt dyno' feel works sometime.

the ultimate is a good option to control timing and fuel , while monitoring engine parameters , used it on my car for 6 months and sold it to reddo tuner

haydn28's right. When you start to get into tuning, you'll realize that the "butt dyno" won't cut it and a proper interpretation of a dyno chart would be the best way to know when to set VVT to engage. From that point on, you can use an rpm window switch to set it, but as you continue with the tuning, you'll find ways to squeeze without VVT and that's when the adjustable cam gears come in.
There are guys in B'dos that are doing it, but I don't know of anyone locally.

i will have to look into that. dont think the fuel lines are leaking though. the most i could change is the rubber line that runs from the metal line to the gas intake on the engine. Will have to carefully check to see if i have an exhaust leak. i dont see any gas leakin like in liquid form.

where can i get the O2 sensor the my 20v bt. would really like to replace it. and how many O2 sensor do they come with. A next thing. My cataylst converter (dont know if thats the right name), the ting that is attached to your exhaust. my sensor for that is givin some trouble. where can i get the to replace it
