Need advice: Porting Back Dash to avoid dropping down the back seats

Postby mrreaz » September 30th, 2021, 10:02 am

For those who have a subwoofer in the trunk of a normal non-hatchback vehicle (sedan), other than having to inconveniently drop down the back seats so you can hear the full bass coming through properly, what about creating a neat hole/port in the back dash?

Can this work....will this be as effective as dropping down the seats?

Looking for any recommendations, thanks

To achieve a similar output as you did when the rear seat was folded down, the opening on the back dash will need to be large. If cutting this large opening on the rear dash, ensure that you bolt/weld structural braces back into the area.
A skilled fabricator/upholsterer will be needed to remake the back dash as well.

Aero port through the seat like a nice big grommet

I tried something like that years ago with my old Mazda 323. Like most car audio attempts I tried with that vehicle, it was pretty much a disaster.

imo even if u do it perfectly neat : porting of a seat backrest not only interferes with comfort for that unlucky person who has to sit in d middle & even d millionth chance of an accident what it might do to somebody's back , but it also looks ghetto

i rather port d back dash which will look more oem & not affect seat comfort\safety but thats just me ... :|

What if you treated it like this?

The trunk basically becomes the chamber on the right

The issue for me with that car was the location - any subwoofer placed near the rear seat sounded like crap.

That's acoustics for ya, weird af.

Worked on a Y12 and the sweet spot for the sub ended up being behind the front passenger seat, i would get PERFECT cancellation from anything 60Hz and up.

Good thing it was a small box
