Tweeter spheres, minor build mod.

Postby nervewrecker » November 8th, 2015, 1:16 pm

Across in Asia some of our car audio brethren's have a slightly different culture in mounting tweeters. If im not mistaken our very own forumite headshok (owner of shok industries) has some tweeter spheres in a build somewhere.
In wanting to be different I liked this build:

Image

Decided it will look good with HAT L1V1's.

Went out and purchased three 2.25" syrofoam balls at samaroos. Why three, because I tried to use paint as a barrier between the resin and syrofoam as resin will melt syrofoam. After I spoil the first one another had to be obtained.
Covered them in black silicone, two coats.

Cut up and split some mat, applied resin. A few coats later and curing:

Removed the aluminium rod and cut it open.

A quick dry mix was done to avoid the fumes eating away on the syrofoam.

Some sanding and filing. Polycarbonate circle added so I can mount my tweeter to it.
Got some Upol fiberglass filer paste thingy.

Didnt like how the end result on one was looking, wasnt sphere-ish, looked like a gauge pod. Got some more sanding today. 50 grit, 80 and then 1200.
Primed with clear primer and test fitted both HAT L1V1 tweeters.

Considered doing this but thought it would be too visible from outside the car........

Anybody have pics to show from the outside just how obvious it is?

Great work there guy...

is there any way to countersink the tweet into the the sphere a bit more for a "flusher" profile tho?

Shok industries? :D

roger, I wanted to countersink them like in the sample pic but it would look too much like a ball cut in half if I open the sphere anymore. Couldn't get a bigger ball.

They will stand out on the passenger side I suppose firewall but on the driver side it should be easily mistaken for a gauge pod.

Vulcan Engineering in the misc section does 3d printing of items. I`m sure they could do the pods.

Was there any noticeable difference when you tested them as compared to how they were installed previously?

Truth be told this is a recent build. The OEM placement is on the doors but because of the space available these tweeters couldn't fit hence the need to mount them elsewhere. Didn't want to cut the A-pillars and for some reason they didn't sound all that great angled that way.
Originally some instamorph plastic I have was used to build some domes and they sounded pretty alright angled upwards. They worked great till one day the car was left outside in the carpark at work and they melted. :/

Since that I been looking for an alternative and said, hey, never tried tweeter spheres. They dont really affect the sound so to say because they are more for aesthetics but the left tweeter could use a little angling.
They might be mounted higher (maybe) as I have to find space for some gauges in the near future.
