Just curious

Postby crackshut » September 15th, 2014, 1:03 pm

I recently got a double10 box from my pardner. When I get Inside had some kind of cotton
Thing inside. So I hooked up my subs 2 American bass xo 10. wow and the bass line real rocking
Loud notes and lows. So just wanted to know what is that cotton Thing inside the box and does it
Make a difference to how the box plays

The "cotton thing" is dacron/ polyfill. It acts as a dampener and makes the box perfomr like a slightly larger box than is actually is.

Google Polyfill or Dacron and enclsure design and see.

It does make THAT much of a difference, the box is probably well built (solid) and the volumes and Q match with your subs to your liking.

It lowers the tuning a bit too

It good/bad depending on where you put it
on the walls are fine, but right up against the sub kinda bad

I wonder would it have the same effect on a sealed box as a ported

It is actually used mostly in sealed applications! And it will make the woofer believe that it is in a slightly bigger enclosure.

A lining of dacron in a vented box works great as well.. It can help reduce standing waves inside the enclosure and reduce any unwanted sounds coming from the rear of the driver.

I got some of each if you need eh.

I see some say its helps smooth out some peaks in the response too.

Maybe he means for a sealed box.

I'm open to correction on that though roger (you will know more about this than me).

That's freq or impedance there?

It will lower Fb for a ported box as well. It will also damp the output below Fb, which is a good thing. I used stuffing in my car audio vented boxes years ago (when I used vented boxes in my car audio system). They worked VERY well.

It should be possible to drop Fb a bit lower than that too. The usual method of determining the best amount of stuffing to use is to simply keep adding it until Fb stops dropping.

BTW, those ripples in your impedance curve below 120 Hz or so suggest that there may be other issues with that box that need to be addressed.

Brian this is what I'm using to gather the data, so it's not too accurate
