DIY HT/ 2 channel speakers

Postby gfbl » July 16th, 2014, 9:09 am

Has anyone ever constructed a diy kit (meniscus, zaph, pbn 741 etc) or made speakers with their own choice of drivers? Plenty examples are online but wanted to know if anyone undertook this endeavour locally. If so did you build your own passive or went active? what drivers were used? How did you build your passives? Build log? Did you build the cabinets your self? If not who would be capable do doing it? Something along the lines of piano black or a veneered finish.

Yeah! I tried something called Maurbacs, build with a pair of Aura Ns6-255 and a Vifa tweeter. And built the crossover like this

Bought all the components from PE. I actually changed the resistor value cause it was a little bright for my taste.

They actually sound okayish... but i dont really have a reference point. I also did not build the enclosures properly(out of pure laziness) They were really supposed to be built like this...

But anyway it works! and blends pretty well with my sub.

Built the Tritrix transmission line mains and ported center, the nano neos bookshelves, Wolf`s PC, and a simple aura ns3 ported bookshelf set.

The crossover was fairly simple, used a perf board, 16ga stranded wire, some hot glue and zipties.

As for finishing, if you want gloss piano black, I hope you have patience. Multiple primer coats and fine sanding before paint and then multiple clear coats and polishing after paint. An automotive painter would be your best bet.

Almost all the kits Jeff Bagby designed on Meniscus are tough to upgrade from.

These were some that were built by students in my school, as part of an alternative curriculum project. Using parts and materials that were donated by some very generous tuners, silent riot, fuzz, and SQ audio.

In the process of accumulating parts for a build also.
Bought some midrange already but decided that they won't work with the system.

Two questions.
Does that magnet cause interference with electronics being somewhat close to a pc?
2.where locally can these speakers be found?

Magnets don`t affect lcd screens only those old crt tvs and monitors.

The home audio driver selection is non existent in Trinidad unfortunately. The market is too small.

a pity the market is so small, alot of value to be had from diy. I see we have a Bowers and Wilkins dealer which is great step.

If you're going to DIY yourself some home speakers, I suggest going with one of the existing kits (some of which are mentioned earlier in this thread). If you're going to strike on your own, then the process becomes considerably more complex, as to get the best results you'll need to familiarize yourself with frequency response curves, impedance curves, x-over design and the software and hardware tools that can be used to put a system together, which will likely have to be tweaked after you build it anyway.
