Want to buy speakers

Postby importzxtt » May 31st, 2014, 9:07 am

So im looking into purchasing some speakers to build a nice home system i would love to go with the 10" rcf and horns to match but my budget is not that great at this time. I want something loud and clean, not normal clean, something i can really listen to all day after being accustomed to hearing music from a harmon/kardon amp. Im pretty sure i want some 8" speakers and some hf drivers to compliment those. What do you all suggest, out of all the most popular models we look at which should i be checking?

your enclosure concept and design will be more important that the speaker choices themselves, seeing that there are many brands that carry many models which will cater to your needs

but on the other side, here's a proven combination for pa/home use that has worked and still works very well for me from 80hz-20khz with an exceptional polar response for the most possible even coverage over a wide area with a 116db average sensitivity , and 121db continuous output

Eminence alpha 8"
https://www.parts-express.com/eminence- ... r--290-401

Eminence ASD1001 high frequency driver
https://www.parts-express.com/eminence- ... i--290-525

Dayton audio H08RW wave-guide (there is a significant difference between horns and wave-guides)
https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-au ... d--270-308

If you are going fully active on your networking -

LF-
Lowpass- 2.25khz (Bessel 24db)
Highpass - 80hz (Bessel 24db)

HF- (reverse phase 180degree)
Highpass - 2.25khz (bessel 12db)

HF Delay-
Not really necessary, as the components are almost identically on the same plane , but if you must 1.25" is required

Enclosure -
.75 cuft Total internal
3" port 4.5" long
60hz

Before the car audio men run in and recommend this that and the other, please note home audio/ pa audio is a different game, and most times the highest end speaker will never achieve the desired results for a specific application , so therefore it is necessary to use products that target the major aspects of the results required

But aren't you really limited in bandwidth as far as bass goes? I had some plans to do something similar, the faitals fe 6 & 8" simmed alot better than the eminence midranges. Decided on faital's 4fe35 fullranges in a 1/4 wave enclosure. Just have to build it now.

yes, i agree, they will lack proper bass reproduction, but that's where a dedicated subwoofer comes into play, as they will be used for midbass, midrange and treble reproduction

I like the idea of the full ranges in a 1/4 wave, but are you tappering them or straight loading?

post photos when you can!!!

@soundstream626, very nice too see i'm not the only one looking at these, very very nice professional flat pack kits

Dunno when i'll actually build it, i'm a horrible carpenter lol. But if anyone wants to give it a go, here's the sim in hornresp. The first is the combined response corner loaded @ half space, excursion rockets under 38hz. The second is just the line's output. The line is 50cm^2 throughout including the mouth, length seems good anywhere from 160-200 cm, you can build shorter and damp accordingly with some loss in efficiency. Both 4fe35 and 32 sim pretty close.

Thank you for your response and potential design plans. I understand that the proper enclosure design will "make or break it" in terms of sound. I was really looking at the Faital Pro 6FE200, Ive heard good things about them here. I plan to use a Alpine Type R 12" for bass in a custom slot ported enclosure. What compression driver would be a good match to these speakers? Would i be missing out in the mid bass area?

Also im seriously considering the QSC GX3 amp to power the speakers if they check out to be what i really want. Clean, loud, midbass/sound that excites. What type of crossovers should i be looking into?

Just curious - the Eminence Alpha 8" is rated at 94dB/1W/1M and it's an 8 ohm driver. How did you manage to get 116dB average sensitivity from it?

The Alpha and Beta 8s (I use the latter in a cheaper PA design) are pretty decent drivers, requiring only simple passive x-overs to get the best results from them. The Beta provides a bit more cone-control and can get down to 60 Hz in a B6 alignment.

My mistake Brian , that was a typo on my part. That was measured output on average and the other was max continuous
