Make your own woofer tester for less than $20

Postby Soundstream_626 » February 22nd, 2013, 3:05 pm

I found a nice tutorial on how to do this cheap. You dont need to buy a 90USD Dayton wt3. Some of you might find this quite useful. I finished mine today and tested it with one of my Faital 4fe30 mids and the tsp`s I pulled were within 10% or so from factory spec.

So heres the tutorial:

Now to help me, I used wire which was clearly labelled positive and negative to be extra sure which wire was going where. I also labelled my diagram to further help this. The poster in the tutorial mixed up his wires.

First i measured all my wire lengths and tinned the ends to be soldered to the resistor. I didnt tin the ends going to the plugs because sometimes the extra solder makes it difficult to insert the wire through the hole in the tab. A set of helping hands is a must.

Image

before soldering the plugs remember to insert the shell, strain relief and the polythene sheath for the TRS jack. If you forget you will have to desolder the plug which may ruin it.

I had a broken 3.5mm to RCA adapter as pictured below. I cracked it open and removed the guts and used the empty shell to house the resistor. I hot glued everything into place.

The finished product is not pretty but it is fully functional.

You can attach alligator clips or leave the wire bare if you are using push terminals.

Heres a screen shot of it measuring the impedance plot of the Faital mid:

The Fs is very close to the factory spec.

An important note: if the speaker has a pole vent, just for safety, dont block it. See if u can prop the woofer on its side.

Here is a link to the software:

so yeah, thats my contribution. Hope others give it a go. All in all, about 10 to 20 bucks TTD depending on the wire and plugs you choose.

dawg...DAWG...DAWG

THANK YOU!!!

Anyone with a woofer tester wants to try it out to see how much of a difference this has from a store bought one?

I don't think comparing it to factory specs is enough though, differences in the atmosphere (factory test environment and trinidad) might be different,,, age and break in might cause it to differ also

I think it should be compared against an actual woofer tester (and the long old fashioned way if possible  )

with the amount of people sporting "custom built subs" and dead inks in the stickies I vote for this one to be stickied.

I have 2 15" subs I want to rebuild from scratch, this will save me soooooooooooooo much money if it's accurate

Improved the circuit diagram to make it easier to understand

I got around to trying this, but while calibrating with the 10 ohm resistor, the graph showing a major drop at 60Hz. I think it's because of noise interference from the mains :(

I check the resistance from the PC case to the outlet ground and it's 9ohms, so I'll have to bypass the voltage regulator and see if that's the problem

okay, that dip miraculously gone.

everything working normal, but I have no way of knowing if the results correct. Because when I enter the parameters in Bass Box Pro, it saying some parameters wrong

Anybody have a Dayton DATS or WT3 that willing to try this to make a comparison?

Very nice find, been looking for something like this to measure TS specs on a cheap 15" MTE Woofer.

By chance would anyone have specs on this driver I think its the SHS 158 model I tried contacting the manufacturer but no response
