need to extend some cables.

Postby nervewrecker » October 4th, 2011, 10:45 pm

ok so I edited the thread title, I need to extend 2 pieces of 8awg cable. one from the alternator to teh battery pole (+tive) & one from the pole to the fuse box.
The wires are approx 1/2 " & 1/4 " short.

Do I change them or get some sort of connector to join them?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

something to join some 8 awg wire.

something like this but with an insulated housing:

You can always use an uninsulated joiner and use heatshrink to insulate.

^^^

I thought about that but if the heat shrink gets damaged we talking about the main wire from my alternator being grounded.

those look good. anything I can get locally btw? If not I guess I will have to order.

hold on........the wire not long enough? or you trying a fancy connection?

if it not long enough then just buy a piece nah

anything joined there going to be on my mind and any connector has the probability of failing in the engine bay.

the wire from the alternator to the battery terminal is approx 1/2" short & the one from the battery to the fuse box is approx 1/4" sort. It gets as far as the terminal but cant get in. :|

suggestions?

 stress! you should never pull wires tight in a vehicle, always leave some free play.. Buy a 3-way distribution block and use that instead.. Alt to block, block to batt and block to fuse box.. Can safely mount on firewall..

Didnt modify anything, my new battery is taller than the teeny little battries those cars use.
With the traditional el-cheapo battery terminals they reach fine but with the RFDB1 its just a tad bit short.

No, it the stock 8awg wires I talking about. I have my rockford 0awg at home to do the big three with (have to get propane torch before I tackle it).

but for doing d big 3 it doesnt cost a whole lot to oversize it a little so i just rather do that ... :|

Hey pal. When you are really ready check me.

We can use a Hydraulic compression crimper, and then some industrial 600v direct burial, adhesive lined heatshrink. not them jokey heatshrink that selling all over the place now...

Like I said, when you serious.

An office building.....

BTW OP 8 AWG cable not all that expensive.... just buy a new length and redo the connection, will save you alot of headache.

I was thinking of just by passing the stock 8awg cable (disconnect & remove it) & replace it with the length of 0awg cable I have. But protection of that length of wire is an issue & I havent found suitable fuse holders as yet.
The 8awg cable from the +tive terminal to the fuse box looks like it can be replaced by a small length of 8awg (that is no stress).

btw, nigel1977 pm me a cost to do this, I might have some spare time next weekend.

I will do some looking around in the engine bay & see what I can come up with meanwhile.
