Frequency and Stereo seperation?

Postby GVTrini07 » February 22nd, 2011, 4:28 pm

Bass can be ran from a Mono signal with no real loss when listening to an Audio Reproduction. At what average frequency does stereo seperation begin to play an important part of a SQ system?
What evidence do you have for your answer?
Is this listening enviroment dependant or is it an accepted truth in various environments?
Can Midbass be ran in Mono?
Would there be any loss in harmonics and or ques 200Hz and lower?

Did a search and could not find anything on this, not too sure if this was discussed?

My memory not so good these day, but it was discussed at SQS, the frequencies critical for imaging would be defined by that which corresponds to the largest dimension in the car. I believe this frequency is about 140Hz or so. Over this frequency is critical to imaging. Below this frequency there is so much reflection and diffraction, it isnt as critical iirc.

That's in theory...
However, in practise, some foreign competitors have argued for the need of mono SUBBASS.
i.e. There are a couple (Steven Head and some Norweigan guy) competitors who mentioned in the past that there is an audible improvement in running SUBWOOFERS in stereo, including imaging. Needless to say, they are proving themselves in competition time and again. (They have their subwoofers upfront, mind you).

That being said, the higher frequencies of midbass would be an even stronger argument.

Good timing for this question.

I currently use a single 4 channel amp to power my system, while I rebuild. The midbasses are run in stereo, off the HU from the subwoofer RCA output.

I tried using the HU controls for level control for left and right Sub outs and it made no difference to me, leaving me to assume that the sub outputs on my HU is MONO.

They are crossed at 31 to 200Hz with a 12dB slope at the 200Hz point. I notice no loss of imaging compared to how I previously ran them. Maybe it's just me.

this occurs when the frequency wavelength is no longer shadowed by your head.

I will try this out on one of the test disc (believe focal disc 2). There is a couple of tracks with vehicles (one a motor cycle another may be a helicopter) which goes across the stage. I believe some of the frequencies on this recording goes down to the Midbass/Sub region, but is mainly when the object appears directly in front or overhead. I'll try the Midbass on Stereo and Mono on see if there is any differences.

Any other experiments which I can try?

Would this vary from person to person? Would it be around the same frequencies where HRTF no longer applies?
