WTK Car Stereo to Dual Amp Advice.

Postby jramna1 » November 9th, 2014, 1:53 am

Im doing a new set up on an old car, basically replacing entire stock set-up.

The Stereo Receiver I bought only has one RCA output. its 2-channel.
what Im planning for the car, is 2 front speakers, 2 rear, and a subwoofer, powered by
a. 4 channel amp - for front and rear speakers and
b. mono amp for sub

Would this Receiver work with for this set-up, as a preamp/eq?

Or would I need to purchase an Pre-Amp separately?

I'd recommend the pre amplifier for that setup. Clarion has a nice one, it will accept the one 2CH input and it has separate outputs for Front / Rear / Sub. You could use the Front / Rear outputs for the 4CH amp and Sub output for the Sub amp.

Note that most 4CH amps are 2ohm stable per channel (4ohm stable bridged mode) and most car speakers are 4ohms. Pay attention to your speaker choice if you want the maximum potential out of that amp.

Thank you for the advice, Really appreciate it. I think I would get the preamp then.

Also @3stagevtec: - IF I had a 6 channel Stereo Receiver (i.e. with three pairs of RCA outputs);
1. Would a preamp be required in this situation?
2. Would the preamp provide better EQ/Preamp function that the 6 channel Receiver?

BASICALLY I'm asking if the dedicated pre-amp unit (like the Clarion EQS746) would provide better control/quality over my sound,
vs just using a Stereo Receiver that has an included Pre-Amp/Equaliser built in like in the Pioneer DEH-X6700BS.

(and I getting 2 ohm speakers as well as a amp that 4-channel amp that outputs at 2ohms, amp n speakers matched for rms)

That Pioneer deck outputs 2V on the RCA outputs. To be honest, that isn't much.

The Clarion is rated at 7V which means you can run the amps with the gains set much lower. Lower gain + higher signal is always better.

Some higher end Pioneer decks output around 4V on the RCAs and come with basic EQs. The Clarion has a 7 band parametric EQ.

The only time I would say the deck alone is superior is when you using a really high end unit with advanced features (such as time alignment, graphic / parametric EQs etc)

provided is a decent, you wont need eq and you dont wanna spoil your dashboard with a preamp one of the aftermarket xovers will give you high, mid and low. The clarion mcd 360 is one that will take a pair of inputs and give 3 pairs out using the "sum" feature.
