components/coaxial

Postby insanelunatic » September 1st, 2014, 3:20 am

iam considering a system that consist of four pairs of either comps or coax 6.5" 4ohm both @ 50/200rms/peak
the amps spec reads 130x4 @2ohm and 80x4@4 ohms
I was told that the amp will play the coaxial perfect but may not do the same as for the components because of the passive x-over and tweeter... is this true? btw brand is (DD)

Coaxials are just slightly different than the components. They have a onboard crossover where as the components have externals

Go with the jbl coaxial. They are two ohm. Get full power from your amp

Components have superior designed passive crossovers. Most coaxials are very basic in design. Components all the way..

What's an example of a coax with a good passive crossover?

That +3db is the attenuation for the tweeters, it's not a crossover. Your setup suggests the those door speakers are highpassed at 125hz. What you should do is lower the setting on the deck to 80hz, if the deck has that range of course.

I took a look at the user manual on the site. The comps have a decent crossover, however there was no mention of a crossover on the coax. Leads me to believe that like with other manufacturers they are relying on the natural characteristic of the woofer to filter high frequencies and I'm guessing that it's a single capacitor for higher high pass to the tweeter.

MB Quart PVF 216 and some of the older coax Quarts had a small passive on the frame itself
German Maestro Status or Epic
JL Audio C5 or C3
I also believe that the infinity kappas had a proper x-over
There are so much more out there!
Dls had a very high end coax with proper passives

From his experiences and knowledge I dont think what he said is written in stone.
There are exceptions, look some coax can double as comps. My (formerly his) CDT comps, the HAT imagines function as comp or coax. Not too sure of the xover network on the imagines if there was a bandpass for the woofer but I do recall seeing some sort of cap for the tweet.

I know you have experiences with some decent coax as well.
