midbasse's in the floor, yay or nay?

Postby nervewrecker » January 30th, 2013, 11:01 pm

My current 2 way setup with 6.5's in the kicks have done well for me but....one gets bitten from the upgrade bug every so often and me being me love to bite off as much as I can chew and maybe a tad bit more. Trial and error is a good way to learn and I share my ventures and results online so other enthusiast's can probably learn from my mistakes.

I have come for an opinion and some guidance wrt my new venture before I bite into it. The thread title says it all as to what I am attempting.

Now nigel rightfully said that 2 drivers within half the diameter of each other can be TA as one. With midbass in the door and mid in the kick however I will have to bring the mid closer to me (and the door) to get it within this distance. As a result, larger PLD so TA is needed.

Now comes the depth issue. I will be having the same depth as my current setup so nothing will be gained. Apart from increased bandwidth for the front stage I wont be gaining anything else.

I have read that frequencies under 100hz are omni directional and was pondering if installing them in the floor up front facing upwards will affect my staging and depth. Off the top of my head I have forgot the frequencies that form the stage but im pretty sure it will be covered by the mid that is now going to be sunk deep into the hollow that exists behind the kick panel.
The midbasses will be closer together than they will be in the doors but further up front, I also have no special aiming or mounting angle in mind as yet...will I need to have any?

Mid is most likely the Faital F4FE32 and the midbass undecided for now but I have approx 4" of mounting depth and approx 1 cubic foot of internal volume to play with. No it will not bother me in any way as it will clear of my foot and the accelerator pedal.

Thoughts, comments? Yay or nay?

I still have a few months before I bite into this, I promise pics of a custom stealth amp rack and upholstered trunk floor before that so look out for it.

Nerve,

What are you hoping to gain by putting the midbasses there?

When I had mine there (temporarily of course) I liked the sound for sure, but it was kinda inconvenient for a daily driven vehicle.

Honestly, I have had much much better performance with my midbass in the doors.

Are you doing a low profile fglass enclosure for them?

Looking for more bandwidth (ability to play down to 50hz with authority)
More depth and width (wider stage)
And yes, low profile fiberglass enclosure in the foot well. False floor bizness.

Personally I think you maybe better off with better/ bigger drivers in the doors and utilize your decks capabilities.

Even your current set up IMO hasn't been utilized 100% and has a lot of potential still in it from tuning. Don't jump to a 3way yet you can get what you want with your current setup.

But by putting back the mids in the doors i'm back to where I was before. There is only so much digital processing can do for you.

Now dont get me wrong, it sounds great in there wrt the bandwidth but still its lacking the low end. Only a pretty expensive pair of 6.5" can go down to 50hz with authority and even in the doors they wont be as far apart as a pair of widebanders in the kickpanels.

I can put the midwoofers in the doors though but can anyone quickly indicate if midwoofers bandpassed at 50 - approx 250 will affect the stage width?

I have a used pair of L8v1's sleeping.

If you dont mind that your windows wont go all the way down, because the stop limit would have to be raised, then all of your midbass issues will be sorted out.

Optimising the installation of cheap speakers will only get you an optimised cheap speaker.

Want a solid midbass, down to 40 hz? i've got something for ya.

Look what you gone and cause now.

Full HAT....tempting....very tempting (I know of a set of HAT tweets that were lurking around these regions fo small $$$). Will be at the meca event to demo some 2 way systems and see what tickles my upgrade fancy.

The only 2 way setup I could see myself with is HAT or Morel.
