HELP - Box Enclosure for Pioneer TS-W255DVC 10" Carbon Fiber

Postby cold fusion » November 11th, 2012, 1:32 am

I'm currently doing a small project in a van with a Pioneer TS-W255DVC 10" Carbon Fiber ...

I want to build a box so that i will get a nice low bass .... ( I am building the box myself ) ....

The manual says 1.1 cu.ft. for ported enclosure with a port of 3" Diameter x 7" Long ...

Now the thing is .... We know Pioneer love bigger boxes !!!

Does anyone have any experience with this sub-woofer in terms of what box size to use ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I am just a noob to car audio and even bigger noob with respect to enclosure design and building, but the one enclosure I did build, I used the calculator in the link below, and some of the manufacturer's details as well as whatever I had to input and designed an enclosure for an 8'' sub. Sub use to play real decent in the enclosure and it was a total DIY. Calculator was real easy to use as well.

The t/s parameters are available at the link given:

Driver = Pioneer TS-W255DVC
Vas = 25.1
Qes(d) = 0.384
Qms = 14.136
Re = 1.500
Fs = 36.0
Le = 0.89
Xmax = 11.5

Pioneer's suggestion results in a box with a 3+dB bump at 50 Hz and reduced power-handling below about 40 Hz or so. It should be good enough for most people. I might be tempted to use a slightly longer vent to get a lower Fb. I suggest designing the box so you can experiment with different length vents between about 14" to 7" (leave 3" of clearance behind the vent).

Ok, noob question, so how does one go about designing the bo using the above specs? Reason I am asking, the speaker I had, I could not have gotten any technical specs like above for it. I even emailed the company and they didn't have it (Audiopipe 8'') but I used the program above and seemed to work ok. But the technical specs, how does it tie into the design? With another program, or some kind of calculation you all do or something? [/noob]

dont have the sd so I used 7" diameter from the sundown.

pink line is 1.1ft^3, 3" port, about 9.9" long

green is 1.3ft^3, 3" port, approx 7.9" long

yellow is 1.5ft^3, 3" port, 6.5" long

all tuned to 38hz

white is 1.5ft^3, 3" port, 8.2" long, 35Hz tuning.

lost soul, I like to punch it in and see how the curve looks, different sub will behave different in different box.

Ok ppl ...... so i got up SUNDAY morning bass hungry .......

Took my dual chamber 12" box that i had my 2 Image Dynamics ID 12's in and cut a ring to use as a plate

The internal specs. is 1.9 cu.ft. and tuned to approx 33 Htz.

Port Dimensions - 4.25" x 15.75"

The end result is that i was amazed and more than happy with the performance of this sub in the said box ....

So therefore when I'm building the box for the van i will build it 1.9 cu.ft and tune to 33 Htz.

That box sounds kinda big for a pair of ten's. Power handling will be reduced when it so big, the sound will be kinda loose.
But still, try it and see, you can tweek to suit.

Not Quite ...... The bass is hitting quite accurate and lowish .......

However as i'm now seeing i think either the box or port a little too big for the sub ... OR BOTH ! ... :?

When i'm building the box for the van i dont really think i'll be able to fit a 1.9 cu.ft. box INbetween the front seats so i'll try to get around 1.5 - 1.75 cu.ft. ( AND thats even if i could get so much !!! ) And probably use a 3" port instead as recommended .... But i'll tune to either 32 or 33 htz ...

And i'm using a single 10" not a pair bwt ......

Thanks.
