One of things that now intrigues me is new versions of dolby processing (eg. Prologic II) which upmix stereo into 5.1 sound. What this means is that there would be no need to worry about path lengths that much, because there is a dedicated l,c,r channels to handle image placement.
This is not new technology, it's been around in car audio processors eg. JBL MS-8, etc.

You will still need to worry about path lengths.

I've never really listened to Prologic sound carefully. The cars that had MS8 locally, did not use the Logic 7 processing either. However, a properly set up kickpanel install does it for me yes.

You will still need to worry about path lengths.

Of course, note "that much".
I can see how placing the l,c,r on the dash will work in a prologic/logic 7 setup for 2 seat.
The path lengths you'd need to worry about are between L and C, and C and R only for LOC and ROC images. Path-lengths between L and R would not matter, because the cues that path-lengths are responsible for would be handled by the C channel.

Path length would be less of an issue if one could implement a center channel which could play as low as LR channels.
In the case of logic7, freqs below the center channel hpf will be directed to the LR channels and sub in which case equal PLD would help.

Has anyone locally used the MS8 in its Logic7 configuration? i.e. with center?

Logic 7 can be used without a center channel but rear channels are necessary. This configuration only allows single seat listening position though.
Have this setup so in my car and it is enjoyable IMO. L7 seems to make the soundfield larger and seem less like listening in a car (on some tracks more than others).
Would love to listen a car with center channel and L7 though.

Even the good ole' Alpine H701 has ProLogic II upmixing from stereo sources, and can be used to get a center channel from stereo sources.
