First thing first you need a surround sound processor like for example Dolby digital pro logic ll or DTS to decode you input signal to 5.1 or 7.1 output signal to your amplifiers and so on , secondly you need to place your speakers correctly that is very important speaker placement is important in a 5.1 surround sound system in order to experience the true surround sound effect, there are left front and right front speakers, left rear and right rear speakers, center speaker and your sub which can be placed any where a sub is unidirectional it can be placed anywhere. But the most important component is the surround sound processor there are some cheap ones online probably the size of a harddrive that can decode left and right stereo signal input to 5.1 surround output signal very easy.
