Need advice on hooking speakers to amp

Postby diamondtip01 » March 31st, 2009, 9:02 am

I want to hook up 4 mid speakers to 2channel. 2 speakers are 4ohm and the other 2 are 8ohm would that be a problem.

Wire one 8 Ohm and one 4 Ohm together in parallel and connect it to a channel on the amp.
Do the same on the other channel.
The amp will see a load of 2.66 Ohms. So basically it will give the most efficient use of the amp.
amp has to be 2Ohm stable.

If u had a four channel amp it would be better but, with the configuration above it will work.

but in doing so, the amp will send alot more power to the 4ohm speaker rather than the 8ohm..

if the impedances are the same, the power will be distributed evenly, but when mixing speakers of different impedance, be sure to account for where most of the power will go (i.e the speaker with the least impedance)

I initially typed up what pirate said but then I was thinking what 3stage said here. I learnt something in E.E.E.T.

I might be a good idea to try & get a trade for a 4ch amp.

he didn't give much info so i was recommending the configuration giving the max power out of the speakers available from a 2 channel amp.

Alternatives:
1) Bridge the 4 Ohm sepakers to one channel. and the 8 Ohm speakers to the other channel. This way each speaker pair is getting equal power. Gains can be used to limit the power depending on the amp and speakers.

2)Trade/sell the amp and get a 4 channel.

I did the bridging as Pirate said and it work ok, but I go and buy a 4ch amp
