WTK - Battery terminal voltmeter

Postby Racegod » September 24th, 2008, 10:30 pm

YEs fellars...

quick question... now i know that the terminal going on the +ve battery poll obviously... ..

but theres a blue line that needs to be connected for the volt meter itself, where does that go?...

 ...

most likely it would be a ground lead...

thats what i thought, but the color of the wire was the part that had me confused, cuz its blue like a remote line...

hmm, but that could really be a remote lead.. else the meter would remain on all the time...

i really not sure now...

it must have a ground and it must have a remote turn on
if it only have one wire then it's a ground

see why i asking lol...

... see this is why when i track back to my ole physics notes, i believe the volt meter doesn't complete the circuit, but i can't rem...

i think though that it should be a remote line, cuz it must be able to turn on and off...

^ in that diagram, the voltmeter will give the potiential difference (in volts) across the resistor... it won't give you the battery voltage..

in your case, the voltmeter will be in parallel with your battery.. without a ground lead, it won't work, even if you have a remote lead connected..

now, some volt meters have an automatic turn on circuit in them.. i.e. when there is a large current draw (i.e. drop in voltage) the meter would sense this and automatically turn on.. (hence no remote lead is necessary)

and that would make total sense... ok here goes...

actually in that diagram the voltmeter will show the battery voltage because the load presented by the ammeter and the LED are negligible (and bear no significant voltage across them). Therefore the entire pd will show up across the resistor.

To answer you question though it has to be a gnd wire and the meter is probably on all the time... there's no harm in that. If not and it senses current draw then every time your car is running it shud turn on.
