[BLOG]: Rally Trinidad 2014 hours away

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » March 28th, 2014, 10:44 am

This is a blog post. To read the original post, please click here »

The friendly face and welcoming camaraderie of Caribbean motor sport has been much in evidence this week, never more so than on Wednesday, as competitors, support crews, friends and family gathered at MoSportt Bar & Grill in Caroni for Scrutineering and the Drivers Briefing for Rally Trinidad 2014.

Image

Many still had much to do, particularly those from overseas, as they prepared to help the Trinidad & Tobago Rally Club (TTRC) celebrate the 10th Anniversary of its premier event. While the 24 special stages between tonight’s opening ceremony at the National Stadium and Sunday’s Grand Finale at Saith Park, Chaguanas, offer the motor sport challenge, even getting to the start line has presented issues for some crews!

Starting with our overseas visitors, some firm friends, others new-found companions: delighted to be here (eventually) for the 10th Anniversary, Barbados based ex-pat Brit Harold Morley’s flight sat on the tarmac for quite some time, before deciding on a trip to Grenada! Nine hours later, he arrived in Trinidad to learn that his local co-driver, Shiva Maharaj, was unable to rally this weekend following a death in the family (our condolences to Shiva and his family). As ever, the regional rally community pulls together, and Jamaica’s Hugh Hutchinson, long-term co-driver for Gary Gregg, volunteered to sit with Harold when an announcement was made at the Briefing Meeting.

Image

On the topic of Jamaican co-drivers, Mike Fennell Jnr was out of a job this weekend, as the engine of regular pilot Jeff Panton’s Ford Focus WRC06 is currently separated from the car by roughly 4,000 miles. Idle no longer, Mike will co-drive for Irish first-timer Frank Kelly, which suggests that he hasn’t found time of late to check out YouTube: after all, a co-driver usually likes to look straight ahead down the stage, and Kelly’s MkII Escort ‘Baby Blue’ only knows sideways . . .

Oh, and there was further good news for Kelly, who arrived without a service crew for his first Caribbean trip of the year – he’s also entered for Sol Rally Barbados (May 30-June 1); although he is usually his own spanner man, the offer of help from a local crew will doubtless be a benefit, as he doesn’t often rally in temperatures of 35 degrees!

Returning the favour to the event’s Jamaican visitors, the only driver left who had travelled south from the island for the event, Bobby Marshall, saw his co-driver issue resolved when Josh Plaza volunteered for the hot seat . . . which island offered this assistance is, of course, open to question, as Josh is nothing if not a TriniBajan!

Although sidelined for the foreseeable future, four-time winner John Powell got a big welcome on Wednesday night; his mountain bike accident in January has left him with a stainless steel screw in his right collar bone and a fractured thumb . . . and that means it is likely to be at least six months before he can rally again. Disappointing for everyone involved in regional rallying, as he had some great plans for this year.

Image

Away from Wednesday’s formalities, locals and visitors alike have been out on a recce and all are impressed with the tremendous condition of the stages. Thanks for that is due to Junior Sammy Contracting, which has provided the heavy equipment and expertise necessary to prep these gravel stages since 2008 . . . a benefit not only to the TTRC and the world of rallying, but also for farmers who work those areas and enjoy far better access roads than before.

All the WRC drivers are already familiar with the stages, although Neil Armstrong (Suzuki SX4 WRC) has had the most recent seat time, having finish second last year. While Paul Bourne (Ford Focus WRC07) has won twice, in 2004 & ’09, the stages are closer to the format in 2010, when he retired early. Dean Serrao (Subaru Impreza WRC S9) has competed in numerous local events, but luck has so far deserted him in RT, so he is hoping for better . . . after a co-driver’s draw on Wednesday, they will leave tonight’s startline in the order Serrao, Armstrong, Bourne, with the times dictating their seeding for tomorrow.

Image

In Group A , the man with the target on his back is James Betts of Barbados, winner of the TTRC’s Championship last year in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V. Of the locals, David Coelho is in confident mood, after a winter rebuild at Dom Buckley in the UK, with a new sequential gearbox installed. Cristian Bourne (Evo VIII) had some fuel map issues earlier in the week, now resolved, while Colin Khan and co-driver Richard Ramsingh (Impreza) will be looking forward to a weekend of pure rallying fun – just occasionally, stalwarts of the organizing team need to let it all hang out!

Craig Sumair, now just 21 started kart racing at age 16 with the TTKA, entered his first TTRC rally mid season in 2012 with his Evo VI and good friend Matthew Russell as his co-driver. They're confident going into RT14 with no issues, a new Quaife LSD for the Evo's transfer case and a new MOTEC ECU. Craig placed 2nd in Group N and 4th overall in the TTRC drivers championship 2013. Definitely one to look out for now and in years to come.
Image
Craig Sumair / Mathew Russell Group N Evo VI
Not forgetting the two wheel drive groups, Donald Gopaul in his SM4 Lancer 2WD won both SM4 and 2WD classes in the TTRC 2013 Championship. It is incredible the car still rides on stock suspension and only just got full engine management. They will be fighting off Ryan Peyrau co-driven by Simon Rodriguez in their Monster / Lifestyle Motors Ltd Suzuki Swift. Another notable mention in Sarah Jane Gopaul as she is the only female competitor in the entire rally this year. She will be co-driven by Barry Gowondan.

With a final start list of 30 crews, you’re in for a superb weekend – there are seven group classifications, so everyone has something to fight for, right the way down the field . . . and it will be worth sitting tight and waiting for them all to come through, and don’t forget to look out for ‘Baby Blue’!

Friday’s two stages at the National Stadium will count towards the overall results, but the two runs of the Mayor’s Cup at Saith Park on Sunday will not, although crews must start the first of these to be considered an overall finisher. So, are you ready? Saturday is key to success this year, as there’s not enough mileage in Sunday to make up time if you weren’t on it from the get go!

Enjoy!

[BLOG]: Rally Trinidad 2014 - Friday (Day 1)

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » March 29th, 2014, 9:17 am

Rally Trinidad 2014 - Friday (Day 1)

Expectant rally fans packed into the National Stadium last night as the Trinidad & Tobago Rally Club’s 10th Anniversary Rally Trinidad got under way . . . the spectator areas were full to overflowing, with many family groups in attendance, as were the Shell Helix VIP and STAG A Man's Beer liming areas.

Image

All the ingredients of top-flight rallying were on display – close competition, sideways superstars and even a daring demo by local hero John Powell, sidelined from the main competition through injury. To the surprise and delight of all, Powell (with regular co-driver Nick Telfer) drove his old Group A Shell Helix Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX on a spirited demonstration run peppered with donuts and four-wheel drifting; now owned by Reezan Mohammed, the car has not competed since 2012.

Although the short, sharp stage would only take the front-runners around 75 seconds to complete, it was nevertheless a demanding test to start the event, no mere demo for the crowds but an integral part of the results . . . as veterans of such ‘SuperSpecials’ know only too well, you can’t win a rally on a stage like that, but you can sure lose it!

With Trinidad’s Powell and Jamaica’s Jeff Panton both non-starters, it looked set to be a Battle of the Bajans and Neil Armstrong (Suzuki SX4 WRC) and Paul Bourne (Ford Focus WRC07) delivered in full measure! On SS1, Armstrong took the upper hand by 9/100ths of a second; on SS2 Bourne fought back, improving his time by almost two full seconds to lead overnight by just 34/100ths . . . it is exhausting just writing about it!

Image

Behind these two, a further 10secs covered the next six cars, with some close competition in prospect as the rally heads towards Bronte and Cedar Hill for today’s 10 stages. Cristian Bourne (Gp3-A Evo VIII) finished the night third and leading the home defence – he was almost 3secs quicker than the remaining WRC car, Dean Serrao’s Subaru Impreza S9, and had a 5.5secs advantage in Group A over David Coelho (Evo IX). James Betts (Gp3-A Evo V) was another 2secs adrift, after incurring a penalty for a jumped start.

Seventh overall, Ryan Peyrau charged to the top of the two-wheel-drive leader board with two impressive runs in the SM6 Suzuki Swift Sport, a couple of seconds ahead of Group N leader Harold Morley (Impreza STI N14). Frank Kelly’s reputation had preceded him all the way from Ireland, and he did not disappoint – while ‘Baby Blue’ danced and drifted through each run to the delight of the cheering crowds, the Escort was nevertheless quick, to lie ninth overall, just 2.5secs off Peyrau in the 2wd battle.

Stuart Johnson completed the top 10 in his Impreza STI N12, second in Group N, 2.4secs behind Morley and a little over 1sec ahead of Craig Sumair (Evo VI), who ended the night tied for 11th place with Colin Khan’s Group A Impreza.

Image

Drivers looking to move up the leader board today include Ryan Pinheiro (Gp3-A Evo IV), penalised like Betts for a jumped start, and Vincentian Steve Ollivierre (Gp3-A Evo VII), who had seemingly set a time 10secs better than the field on SS1 . . . even though the timing system, marshals and even Ollivierre's co-driver David Jackson all registered the same time (1:02), they all agreed it was impossible, so he was awarded his SS2 for both runs. He was also among those to collect a 10secs penalty – these also included Latiff Khan (Gp3-A Evo VII) – so has time to make up today.

Twenty-nine cars started Rally Trinidad 2014 and all survived the night’s two stages. Today, RT14 ‘proper’ gets under way, as the fast flowing gravel stages for which the island is famous focus the attention of all involved.
