Whats wrong with our diesel ?

hrm.. since i have became looking around for a new car... some of my friends have been bitching about how bad our diesel is.. while others have no complains .. they just warn about a higher service cost on servicing.. Also i notice some dealerships dont bring in new diesel cars (audi.. bmw..for example)

So can someone englighten me about our diesel ?

Diesel is cheaper at the pump...service is higher than a gas engine but many people dont see it that way..do some research..go price injectors/pump for a vigo/navara etc

Trinidad diesel is like someone take a poop in it.
Totally poor quality and barely enough to function properly.

Thing is..... with the newer common rail diesels; the injection pressures are so high and the injector openings are so small that the smallest amount of dirt and water ruins them.
Now I must mention that after 5000km I got about 5 -10 ml of water

Any change in the diesel quality will result in a drastic change in price...then the same men complaining about quality will be the same ones bitching again.

Do what everyone else does and run double filters on your ride and add cetane boosters if that's ur thing.

those td27 in those frontier are the best engines for trinidad poor diesel. Simple and can run on it, as he said above. thats why they find themselves in most crown/royal/280c

Although there is a high sulphur content, I believe the issues are largely related to storage, not the actual fuel. I could be wrong.

In my experience, it requires higher maintenance than gas motors - but I play it safe.
I run synth oil and do 6 mo/ 10K changes.
When changing oil, I also replace oil and fuel filters and use the Amsoil Diesel Conc to fill the new filter. This helps keep the injectors clean.
Every other fillup I throw in a couple ounces of Amsoil Diesel Conc and Cetane Boost.

My 7 year old truck does not smoke (owned it for almost 2 years).

TTBS is working on a new standard. The quality of gasoline and diesel is upgraded in "jumps" as laid out in TTBS standards TTS 269 and I forget the other one (TTS 569 maybe). The latest revisions were from 2011.

I don't know what they will specify but most likely reduced sulphur would be one aspect. Not sure about water content and stuff. The diesel engines brought here work with the current diesel standard. They aren't the latest versions though.

Nope, it's local ... Too bad all the money Petrotrin spent on "new" plants and upgrades their diesel facility is not at 100% operating yet.
It's aimed at reducing the sulphur content

When most of it is removed (lsd to ulsd) what are they replacing it with

I've mentioned before that some service stations mix their diesel with kerosene and sell you that at the pump. ...I bought a diesel engine. ... not a kerosene engine:smile:

Mix of local and foreign raw crude is processed to make all the gasoline and diesel for our local market. Unipet and NP get ALL their fuel from Petrotrin. The ONLY time Petrotrin imports diesel is if there are problems with certain plants that create it and treat it are down.

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel plant is being built at Petrotrin. Was supposed to be completed already but that has been delayed.

Not like it's the plague eh. The service schedules are mated to the fuel quality. Gasoline here also isn't of the same spec as abroad in terms of sulphur and benzene depending on where abroad is. That's why alot of manufacturers still tell you change your oil multiple times per year as opposed to just once in some countries abroad.

i have been using the same diesel for the past 4 years no problem had the van from new once u do your general maintenance on time u good to go and i don't find it all that expensive to maintain a pickup to me the cost is almost the same as a car if not less when u work out the savings at the pump.
i only fill diesel at Unipet and use amsoil diesel treatment recently i tried the liquid moly and it also works well

Work out the savings between purchasing the gas over the diesel and you will see where you spent the money. .. diesel engines also require more oil and more frequent servicing of the fuel system (well current diesel fuel systems)
Replacement parts are also a bit pricey compared to gasoline.

No problems with my van. Top performance, no smoke and i'm not that particular about where I fill up. Like almost everyone here I don't skimp with the Amsoil cetane boost. Has worked out well for me throughout the years over several diesel vehicles.

Well I've had both versions, service intervals for the diesel model were shorter than the gas but no known major issues presented by the firm; both lasted up to 150,000km before changing out

A lot of Hyundai H1 taxis are feeling it. Hard to believe that most of them have already lost their engines and are fitting Nissan TD series engines in these brand new vans.
