ADVICE ON RIMS: CLEANING/POLISHING..........................

Postby WestIndian424 » July 7th, 2014, 9:57 pm

Guys, got my self a set of old school western wheels...not sure what material theyre made from but i want them restored for my project car. What can i use to clean these rims or do they have to be polished or repainted?

Thanks in advance

Try getting them sand blasted... I'm almost sure they are aluminum.. After being blasted they would be very easy to pain... Cheers.

Do not wire brush them, you will do no good with that.

Either you blast them or sand.
+ blasting would leave you with way less work to do.

for me... i did some work using the following method:
1. purple blast rims as is
2. rinse, dried and applied a rust cleaner like cristle rust remover or wonder with a spray bottle (front) and paint brush (back) and let it sit for a while 5-10 mins.
3. scrub with a tooth brush and scrubbing brush, squezy and purple blaster.
4. den used sand paper and water soap mix to smoothen;
5. painted up.

cost was like average 500-700 or so with paint.

other option is to sandblast and powdercoat : last time I did some work at Trinidad Powder Coaters cost me 2,500 sand blast and powder coated in metallic 17s. some persons recommend NineCast on Forums tho..

would be the best bet, the price of powder coating may be off putting tho.
if you can find a paint with a close enough aluminum colour it will be the most cost effective.

I heard sand blasting can alter the balance of the wheel. Is this true? I have a few original 280c rims I also want to get cleaned and polished.

never heard that but in your case, just go to that tyre shop in chaguanas, think its john street( turn off to chag from southbound lane) they have a set like new...they have quite a few sets of OEM rims for different cars :!:

They also polish your rims as well if I remember correctly.

Start at 300 and move up to 1800 - 2000 to finish.
And yes a machine shop can polish them for you. Msg user ^Pretty^ on the forum she has a machine shop up arima.

May be a good idea to get them clear coated. Maintaining the look would be very tedious. Get them where you want them right before getting them coated. The all you wul have to do is polish / wax them from time to time. Just my opinion from a maintenance standpoint.
