The Toyota wins, but not "hands down"...

i'd rate them overall:
1st - Rav4
2nd - Grand Vitara
3rd - Santa Fe

but i'd buy the Vitara if i had to choose one.. love that 4 wheel drive system

If you want luxury:

1st Hyundai Santa Fe
2nd Toyota RAV4
3rd Suzuki Grand Vitara

If you want space:

1st Hyundai Santa Fe
2nd Toyota RAV4
3rd Suzuki Grand Vitara

If you want off-road capability:

1st Suzuki Grand Vitara
2nd Toyota RAV4
3rd Hyundai Santa Fe

If you want reliability:

1st Toyota RAv4
2nd Suzuki Grand Vitara
3rd Hyundai Santa Fe

If you want resale value:

1st Toyota RAV4
2nd Suzuki Grand Vitara
3rd Hyundai Santa Fe

If you want power (top-of-the-line engines):

1st Toyota RAV4
2nd Hyundai Santa Fe
3rd Suzuki Grand Vitara

If you want looks/style:

1st Hyundai Santa Fe
2nd Toyota RAV4
3rd Suzuki Grand Vitara

If you want affordability:

1st Suzuki Grand Vitara
2nd Toyota RAV4
3rd Hyundai Santa Fe

OVERALL RANKING:

1st Toyota RAV4
2nd Hyundai Santa Fe
3rd Suzuki Grand Vitara

Please note the Hyundai Santa Fe competes more with larger crossover SUV's as opposed to the two mentioned here. The Hyundai Tucson is better suited in which case its overall ranking would be 3rd thus pushing the Suzuki into 2nd place and leaving the Toyota unchanged at 1st place.

What if you throw in the new 2007 Honda CRV into this comparison??

Now that vs the Rav4 would be interesting...

i've done web searches and test driven both. the american spec places the crv slightly above the rav4 for features/passenger comfort but the rav4 wins in the performance category. Having said that, in trinidad we dont get the american spec. So no tyre pressure sensors, auto headlights/wipers etc coming from classic motors. Similarly toyota T&T doesn't bring in the V6 rav4.

I've test driven these 2L inline 4 cylinder suvs and the rav4 definitely is more spritely especially going uphill.

The rav4 has more features eg,for 279,000 you get 9 airbags, smart start and entry(push a button to start a la bmw), 1 lever rear seat dropdown, led(longlasting) tail lights, active torque control(allows braking in a straight line), downhill assist, auto headlights/wipers.

The crv has more 'wow' factor when you see it on the road. It had slower acceleration and seemed slower going uphill. None of the above mentioned features on the 'higher end' $299,999 version, and has dual front/side airbags. It does offer steering wheel audio controls which for some strange reason toyota TT doesnt offer on the rav4-weird.

So lets see, i pay 20,000 less and get more performance, nifty features and safety.

hmmm..my mind is made up.

xtrail......thats weird cause when i drove the 07' RAV4 it felt much slower than the previous 00'-06' model it replaced. I checked under the hood and realised it was the same engine but a much heavier vehicle, notwithstanding gearing is slightly better according to the spec sheet but in reality it felt worse so much so that I drove a PBP Xtrail one that is already 4 years older than this new toyota and it will blow it away so badly. Yes i drove the 2.5 but even in the 2.0 the lame-o xtrail seems more sprightly...could be weight or maybe just a better transmission.

The CRV is disgusting, i prefer the previous one which AGAIN felt more powerful since its basically the same engine but now we have more weight. so let me do an objective comparison between the RAV4, CRV, XTRAIL, GRAND VITARA, FORESTER, TUCSON, SPORTAGE, TERIOS and CAPTIVA:

offroad:

1st GRAND VITARA
2nd FORESTER
3rd RAV4
4th XTRAIL
5th TUCSON
6th SPORTAGE
7th CAPTIVA
8th CRV
9th TERIOS

reliability:

1st RAV4
2nd CRV
3rd FORESTER
4th XTRAIL
5th GRAND VITARA
6th TERIOS
7th TUCSON
8th SPORTAGE
9th CAPTIVA

resale value:

1st FORESTER
2nd RAV4
3rd CRV
4th XTRAIL
5th GRAND VITARA

2nd GRAND VITARA
3rd XTRAIL
4th TUCSON
5th SPORTAGE

1st TERIOS
2nd TUCSON
3rd SPORTAGE
4th GRAND VITARA
5th XTRAIL
6th CAPTIVA
7th RAV4
8th CRV
9th FORESTER

quality/finish:

1st FORESTER
2nd CRV
3rd RAV4
4th GRAND VITARA
5th TUCSON
6th SPORTAGE
7th CAPTIVA
8th XTRAIL
9th TERIOS

OVERALL RANKING:

1st FORESTER
2nd GRAND VITARA
3rd RAV4
