My first drift show experience

Postby Sneaky Pete » April 7th, 2007, 10:29 pm

Today was my first drift show in Long Beach. Honestly, drifting sucks :( The cars sounded nice though.

Here are some pics:

Sounded real sweet, however, the best sounding car was the blue Mopar powered car, freaking loud and real sweet. A bit too big for drifting I thought, but just for the heck of it, it will be nice to drive around and wake my neighbors :D

The Signal R34 is equipped with over 1000HP, big surprise is under the top secret Supra, it runs I think an RB26DETT. Nissan FTW. By the way the rush from giong sideways and having control RULES!!! To each his own

My reason is because its not really RACING, its an exhibition, that is JUDGED according to style and execution ...not really a RACE-if you get what I'm saying.

Thats why I don't really like it...its all based on the opinionm of another person...where as-if i cross the line first-I AM FIRST, regardless of what you say, its undisputable!!!

no i must disagree with the... "drifting sucks" a lil bit
cuz the ppl that are capable of doing it PROPERLY must be given full props,
cuz that takes AH HELL OF AH LOT OF SKILL AND BALLZ
and i eh lying, i see some pretty sweet drifting already, and it really NOT eazy
and the control and the style and the methods and all dat shiz is really impressive,

what i dont like though is how it is judged...
i think that can be a little kornfusing.

anywayz... sweet pix there Sneaky Pete

as a profession sport, i agree to an extent but as a hobby and a lifestyle like those jap guys do everynight....i'm in total awe
the kind of car control they show and even the professional attitude of taking a brand new S15 or Mkii, etc and sliding it and whether it hits something, it not fazing them...just some zip ties, primer and off u go.
i applaud the lifestyle of a drifter :P

Tsuchiya, YEAH by all means as a hobby, and in its truest form THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS, ON THE STREETS, I respect it...but when it gets classed in the same category as motorSPORT aka motorRACING, thats when I have a slight problem...

The lifestyle is about living on the edge, being a master of control...but when it gets relegated to empty parking lots, in a controlled layout...it looses its appeal :?

^^agreed...it gets watered down as a sport.
then again there're alot of guys and gals that have real drifting talent but prefer to drift on their terms and will keep to the streets.

No it doesn't, Taking a GSX-R 1000 for a 300 mph spin around the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia Spain or the Isle of Man TT takes skill and balls.

Drifting is not a motorsport, it's a motorshow.

Everybody are entitled to their own opinion but i find the true nature of the sports requires more drive skill than any cause the car are relatively under power and it was all about weight transfer.... Now Americans and they heavily torque cars that require little driving skills have kill the true nature of the sport... i remember watching a HOT Version segment with Tsuchiya and some other guy can't remember his name( Japan Team) versus Reece Miller and Ken Gushi (American Team) and the task was to drift a Miata and the Americans could do shiet only reallying on the E-brake to try to make the car move side ways. :?

motorSPORT aka motorRACING

sorry BUT

HUTRINI and sneaky pete - it's a sport NOT a RACE, like surfing, snowboarding, gymnastics, dare i say figure skating  , its subjective in how its judged.. the tandem part of the competition is NOT a race:!:

if you liked drifting maybe you'll know that

its simply a course ran to out 'drift' eachother - there is NO checkered flag winner:!: it's up to the judges,, a slow car vs fast car, it don't matter, they have to out drift each other, passing shows you can drift faster, thats all, and its embarassing to get passes by someone sideways at 100mph ;)

but after my explination, i can say this, drifting is been made into a fan boy thing. but i do like the cars minus the decals.

that gold supra pictured is a USDM replica of the Top Secret car. i think the car pictured is still 2JZ powered
The original Top Secret car with the JGTC Style body kit was actually powered by a 3S-GTE engine. 8-)

The RB26 powered car was white....and it crashed quite some time ago i think. :(

^Ditto. You've said it quite well, and might I add that all of those other sports you named, including gymnastics and figure skating, also require emmense amounts of skills, talent and control. I'd like to see any of you guys who say that drifting is easy, or whatever, go out and make an attempt. Better yet, go out to one of the uncontrolled areas, do it raw, I'll wear black at your funerals.

Cheers

If u think drift sucks, get behind the wheel of the car and try it out. i think then u would have a better appreciation for the skill and adrenaline involved

^^ i have such a respect for drifters eh. Imagine taking your car and trying to guide a sliding car on a mountain road with sheer cliffs on the side...  or doing choku-doris on a 3 lane road with trucks parked n the sie of the road

but after thinking about the standard of professional drift cars....example kumokubo's GD impreza driftcar, weighing in at 2700 lbs with 6oo hp and a sequential g/box, plus R compound high grip tyres. The kind of skill needed to control that slide and react to excessive under/over steer at those high speeds.....RESPECT!!

I was of the opinion that drifting was judged based on certain criteria like speed at which the turn is entered, angle of the drift and general control. It is like other sports that are opinionated, but there are also set guidelines that govern the rating. Remember is is a new sport, it takes time for these things to develop. I for one would not drift, too damn expensive
