Excuse mih for asking a noob question, but what about your driving style can cause gear damage like that?

when you grind a gear in, it's those teeth rubbing together. hard shifting with an unsprung disc will contribute to it because the teeth take all the initial load (normally the clutch springs dampen it).

Oh I see. This has happened to me a couple times in the Ranger. I hope it didn't damage the g/box too bad. How do you know when it's really worn badly or starting to go? Is it difficult to select that particular gear when it's worn? The rest of gears work normally?

How do you drive to the mechanic with such a g/box? Do you skip the malfunctioning gear?

it'll either break or not. even if you screw up the edges a bit from a bad shift, the constant meshing of the gears will machine the gears smooth. problems shifting would usually be due to the synchros going bad (the thin bronzish gears in the pics).

most times you can just skip the broken gear. in my case, it took the input shaft out too so i only had 5th... sometimes.

So then, what prevention methods are there for this type of problem?

Shifting slowly to ensure clutch engagement and proper gear engagement?
Double clutching?

yeah... is not a problem. doh stress. you won't break gears unless you have too much power and metal fatique steps in, or you have a habit of grinding gears in at full throttle.

double clutching is for if you don't have synchros. just drive.
