Has anyone in here noted that the best new car deal right now in T&T is the Mitsubishi Lancer GLX?

The thing is a compact sedan with a 1.6 MIVEC engine, 16" alloys, CD/MP3 sound system, indicator lights in the wing mirrors, full power features, tint, mats, alarm etc for $150k? This is Toyota Corolla equipment listing at $50k cheaper and the Lancer handles way better than any Corolla and I'm sure its overall more fun. Also, the ASX 2.0 is $199k. Imagine you getting a 2.0 motor in a vehicle priced like (you guessed it)...a Corolla! Well done DM. Your pricing is indicative that you all really care for the 'poor' person.

Let's crunch some numbers:

car cost: $150k
down payment: $15k
loan amount: $135k
monthly instalment for 8yrs: $1742

It means anyone making gross $4,500. a month based on 40% TDSR can take out a loan with a mere $15k down payment to buy a very nice compact sedan. In addition, with the removal of paye from those earning $6,000. and less, I expect to see more new vehicles on the road. A new vehicle is not just for Supervisory or Management level staff. Now even clerical level can buy a new car especially since a multi-million dollar mortgage doesn't seem possible for most of the population so people just buying car like hops bread.

New Vehicle Prices In Trinidad & Tobago

Probably because this lancer model is almost 9yrs old...
But still a great price nevertheless. Esp the ASX.

I find it hard to even call the Lancer a 'new car'

Have to agree with you. No shame. That is finally a new "facelift".

At that price some of your options are
Mazda BT50 (previous model) 4x4; if they still have
Mazda BT50 2.2L 4x2
Ford Ranger 2.2L 4x2
Nissan NP300 SE 2.5L 4x2

Your choice will depend on what you want the van for.

All are manual
The Nissan i believe is the most powerful in the group and comes with 6 gears against the 5 in the other options listed. The Nissan is the only one available with coil springs in the rear suspension.
The Previous model bt50 is the only one available with 4wd, but only if they still have any. These previous gen models were known for overheating head issues but only if you did not maintain them properly (replacing thermostat at the required time). The new ranger and the new BT50 are for the most part mechanically identical...the looks however are unique. The smiley face has grown on me but it might put people of.

I have only listed from options displayed on the first page of this thread. I am unsure whether the Hilux still fits in this price range but i can say that it is the slowest of the lot; though the previous model mazda produces less power on paper, rowing through the gears on the mazda is easier.

Reliability on most new vehicles are pretty decent nowadays; Once you don't beat on the vehicle and service on time you should be good for a while

Give them all a test drive

My pick would be the NP300 though

i'd be wary of the ranger with it's AGR issues

Not sure why people making an 8yr old design an issue if it still looks fresh. I know 8yrs in the auto world is a bit long but perhaps if it is successful, why rush to change the formula? In addition, the CY Lancer is a top safety pick and aces the overlap crash tests...can't say same for the newer design compacts out there!

Below is what the 2016 model looks like. I think the design is much better than a Corolla, Civic, Mazda3, Jetta, Korean twins Elantra/Cerato, Focus etc..

If some of you guys feel that way about the Lancer then what would you say about the Grand Vitara, SX4, APV, L300, older BT-50, J70 series Land Cruiser etc cause' all of them are still in production.

That 2016 lancer is a joke of a facelift.

I actually prefer the old look. I wouldnt say it looks better than the newer models but it still looks great and handles better than most. I wouldnt mind getting an evo X when it's time to replace my car

Front looks a little elantra esque with that curved front bumper line.
They said they want to build/design the lancer with a unnamed partner and replacement wont be here for another 2 years!

Launch?? Been driving my 2016 Tucson 2 weeks now. And more Ppl collected theirs before me.

How is it so far? Most likely will be purchasing one myself...

I have the mid spec Gas so there is no cooled glove box to report on as that is the domain of the top end version. External differences between the mid and top spec are the LED Headlamps, DRL and the sun roof. Other than that there is no other difference. Internally is where the differences are.

So far it has been a good driving experience. I live and work on the east west corridor so I haven't been able to take it on a run without traffic or traffic lights as yet (I am still yet to reach 1,000kms).
The cabin ride is smooth and quiet (I am coming from a Lancer for perspective). Suspension is nice and not to firm (supposedly you can choose a drive mode from between Eco and Sport which alters the suspension and steering feel but I haven't used this to see)
The sound system for being only door speakers is one of the better ones I have heard with decent bass. Interior space is good (better than my lancer for sure). Gas consumption isn't too bad for the driving conditions I encounter with my average being 11l/100kms which is around the same that my Lancer actually did. They say you can use Super but I am using premium though.

Dislikes
My Lancer came with factory installed HIDs and I am a bit disappointed in the Tucson having Halogens albeit in projectors housing. Not too much of an issue however would have been nice to have
No Rain sensitive wipers - Once again its a feature I can live without but having had it for the past 4 years you kinna miss it none the less

Out of curiosity, did u test drive any other vehicles before settling on the new Tucson? Specifically the new X-Trail?

Beauty is definitely in the eyes of the beholder

however I do not understand what you see that you would rate this over the new Mazda 3.
You also mentioned the elantra which is about to get a redesign(albeit it looks audi like) soon and all they did with this lancer was change the front bumper and probably the grill.
The new Focus has a revised front coming as well

Just like Mitsubishi, Suzuki appears to be struggling somewhat hence the recent absence from the american car market. L300 is a commercial vehicle so no one really cares about the looks (and another sign Mitsubishi might be struggling) .
J70 is just old Toyota if it ain't broke don't fix it design (probably similar to how the Nissan B13 was being manufactured in mexico, long after the rest of the world had moved onto newer designs).
