clearly you are either wearing blinkers or being taken for a fool
and have been brainwashed by your peers
suggest educating yourself with the entire history of drag racing in this country and the politics behind it
start from why autosport was founded back in the 90's
then come back to the last night drag ttasa had at and the same people who are running ttasa now wanted to know what happened to all the money that was being collected and thrown into a back seat of a car by the gate by the then officials of ttasa
Central Trinidad should get its very own drag racing circuit before the end of the year. The sod was turned on Tuesday to`start the construction of the $100 million facility at Chickland Road, Preysal, Couva. The facility would be constructed on 200 acres of land by the Freeport Raceway Company Limited with financing from Odessa Major Organisation Limited. The first phase of the project would cost $5 million and bring substantial development and employment to the area.
Neil Boodoo, CEO of Raceway, confirmed that the drag racing tracks should be in place within eight months, once the weather holds out. When completed, Boodoo added, the facility would have a 1320 foot long drag strip, a go-kart circuit, a motorcross circuit, a bumper car center, an indoor ice skating ring and a water park. Boodoo said Raceway was looking towards the government to develop the access infrastructure such as roads, lights and water.
Turning the sod was Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh, Caroni Central MP and Minister of the People. Ramadharsingh said governments supports the initiative of the private sector to bring development to the people of T&T. He also recognized the need for getting a racing circuit in place to curb the level of illegal racing taking place on the streets of T&T.
X2 wrote:$5mm and 8 months for an IHRA quality track sounds a bit optimistic... but who cares ? Ppl ready to race... apparently someone is listening.
BTW... around the world... drag racing events (non competition) are held without the sanctioning of NHRA or FIA, etc... TTASA and for that matter, no NSO is not needed to construct or run a facility... why the big argument ?
Stop Chickland drag racing
Monday, February 7 2011
THE EDITOR: Many of the residents of Chickland Village are pleading with the authorities to stop the drag racing project in their area.
They have written to the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) and are awaiting a response to their plight. Ministers Glenn Ramadharsingh and Colin Partap were there at the sod-turning ceremony to lend support to the private drag racing track which, according to resident Ranjit Soogrim, has not gone down too well with some of the villagers.
According to an official of the EMA, no approval has yet been given to build the drag racing track in Chickland Village.
This situation needs to be urgently addressed before any more work is done on the drag racing track.
Many residents including Soogrim are up in arms against the building of any drag racing track in their area and want the intervention of the Government and the EMA.
On November 16, 2009, the then Member of Parliament Dr Hamza Rafeeq wrote on behalf of his constituents of Siewdass Road, which is located close to Chickland Village — to complain that some negative developments were taking place within the community.
A few of the residents, according to Dr Rafeeq’s letter, were approached by the prospective owners who indicated that they wanted a “lil drag strip” to keep away the youths from racing on the road.
However, the villagers were amazed at the dimension of the project which was estimated to cost in the region of 20 million dollars. Dr Rafeeq informed the EMA in 2009 that an Environmental Clearance Certificate was issued to the Trinidad and Tobago Automobile Association for the project without the required community consultation being held.
As a result of Dr Rafeeq’s intervention, the project was halted.
Now the owners have started a new drag racing strip in the neighbouring Chickland Village and they are getting the support of some politicians.
The big question, once again, is whether they have consulted all the stakeholders about the project.
Soogrim and other complainants believe that a drag racing strip being built on approximately 30 acres of land next to the Couva River will ruin the community and the noise pollution will affect villagers for miles around.
They believe that the imported culture this activity will bring to the area will wreck family life, damage road infrastructure, cause traffic congestion and not to mention the disruption of lives on a personal scale.
