drchaos wrote:It is sad cause the price we pay for cars here is ridiculous. What we pay for a yaris in trinidad you can get a bmw 3 series in the states. Also maintenance cost are really high, my cousin from the uk laughed at me when I told him the price to get the jetta's oil and filter change (and it's not an expensive car to maintain).
So when living in trinidad you should be thinking of price and maintenance first. Unless you name Sheron ofc.

Prices of cars here aren't that bad. We have over 800k vehicles. I certainly wouldn't just look at the U.S. In the UK and other places out prices match up and what would you say about Singapore?

Also maintenance costs at dealerships here isn't different from what's charged abroad. Don't know why your cousin is laughing.

http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... f=2&t=7406

Even DIY in the UK can be expensive for our cars:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Oil-change-kit- ... B00JDV9GIY

Also if one does their own maintenance locally things work out even cheaper than abroad.

Even with these things, on forums abroad dedicated to automotive topics the discussion is wider than diesel vs gas and maintenance . I think one can get decent vehicles here with a bit of research but I don't really see people discussing that.

Roro makes things even more interesting in terms of what is available.

^^^ u have to remember the prices for "cars on the road" in other countries is AFTER the dealer makes the profit. Its not like massy paying "on the road" price and importing it. They getting dealer pricing.
But they make the killing in maintenance!

On a side note, with all dem damn VAT MVT DUTIES, they just saying bring in foreign used and done and fill the streets with ah set ah ole car!

Oil change on the jetta is around 1.3K+ now and that's every 5000 miles. Costs half in the UK cause they service every 10000K miles and they have fixed servicing at 149 GBP.

Blame the taxes, the dealers, poor fuel quality etc ... etc ..... etc but my point still stand we pay more money for our cars that other countries don't. What makes the situation worse is when you look at purchasing power of americans and brits vs the trini man. They pay much less and their purchasing power is better which makes the cost even higher for us when you look at it.

Oh yeah and quite a bit of the new cars here come with less standard kit vs murica and Europe.

Forgot to mention way lower warranty periods as well. Which ends up being a higher cost to the consumer.

I actually believe longer warranty periods end up being a higher cost to the consumer.
Now you have to service at the firm longer to maintain a very limited warranty.

Am i missing something though? Is there an advantage to having front disks and rear drums on a pickup vs all disks? For the price people pay for these trucks, throwing in some 4 wheel disk brakes shouldn't be too hard.

You make a good point!

But there are times when a few years extra on the warranty could be a blessing, like when the turbo on your diesel van EXPLODES just outside of warranty or when your shiny euro car transmission takes its last breath after 4 years of ownership.

That price isnt much different from any other new vehicle. The Kia Sportage Service fee (inclusive of fluids and filters) is around $1,500. Not sure what you trying to allude to.

However if you do the service out of the company, your costs are cut almost half (if not more depending on your car).

Was chatting with some coworkers and a discussion came up.
Is warranty optional on a new vehicle from the firm (as in can you pay less and not take it) if you purchasing cash?
And if you buying cash, can you put it third party with a reputable insurance company?

Yes you can put third party once you buy it cash. Once on loan the bank normally wants fully comp.

And this is why you don't buy Euros and Navaras.

Tesla can't even keep pace with its demand in the first world. Also they looking at china next so it will take a very long time before they can meet demands there.

100% agree. For an enthusiast site you would think more ppl would be into the "fun to drive" factor.

Think it's more a function of 2nr's success in broadening its user base. People come for the advice of those who know because it's free for one and the advice is subject to the scrutiny of the community which validates it.
