TriniGT wrote:Thx Bez, finding the candidate proves to be the hardest part, if you get a beat up one then extra needs to be spent elsewhere before you can have a workable base to move forward but finding a proper base is the real problem. I had to spend a little extra to get it to a decent spot but now I can move on and do my upgrades knowing that I have a proper starting point. Glad I went with the R32, I am finding parts much cheaper and locally as well :D.

R32 is the best base, always see a fella around the west with a black one i wanna buy

Saw a nice matt looking black one on highway last nite, looked more aggressive than an R34 for some reason, especially the exhaust it had!

That's a GTS, yes it does look nice. In time I will hopefully get things in order.

Yeah same fella, that's a GTS, with an external. Has some 16" wheels with a polished lip, I think Garagefresh had a feature on it. Supposedly my guards are wider but I think the matte colour will show them more than a glossed finish.

damn, theres two then, the STi had external gate, the GTR had none, sounded like a stock 26, possibly some tuning/boost raise, but no external

Damn!

Untouched factory heat shielding in engine bay, an intelligent painter.

I've been told chassis rails are minor, once the panels are untouched. The unibody chassis gets its strength from panels, pillars and roof.

RRRrrr. that sucks man. Looks like they were used as a jacking point at one time. People have to realise they are pretty soft unless it's on a seam. I wouldn't suggest cutting them. Drill and maybe pull them or even box them off.

Actually when I got the car it didn't have one. I got one off a bare front half and I am in the process of collecting all the clips and whatnot for the engine bay. Problem is that all the brake and ABS hardline plastic holders are cracked, I will need to hunt around for some replacements. Off the bat certain things are not going back in, namely the HICAS setup and the charcoal canister, I will use a HICAS cancel bar and will try to route the line for the charcoal canister up by the fuel lid like in some of the subarus I have seen.

My biggest problem right now is to find a person to come to my location and cut out the rust pieces and replace with proper metal and then I can treat it and paint them, treatment will be on the inside and outside using some form of lithium grease/spray to prevent rusting and inject it into the holes of the door sills. I should be getting a black GTS carpet this week to replace the factory what looks to be commercial grade grey GTR carpet, it really makes the interior look cheap, so hopefully the black carpet will make it look better. Also toying with the idea of dying the hood liner and getting either the visors and house and reading lamps sprayed in black or getting another nissan black setup to work.

Thing is someone will need to come home here to do it. not sure who I can get to do that and then I will need to treat everthing after, needless to say all the fuel and HICAS line and brake lines will need to be removed, that will be a big delay as well. Will have to think it over.

Hmmmm Bez that does sound like a good idea as I have seen pics of it swelling the metal maybe it can pop it back out. Whereabouts locally I can get this, maybe I can try it in small quantities and see what happens.

last time i got was from Amazon.com, couldnt find the right brand locally (think it was called Handi-Foam). gotta be careful with this stuff though, it can disable chassis crumple zones and as you said can seperate the rails/floor and other stuff, when it expands and it has no where to go it get violent. make sure a drill some holes in some places to let it ooze out, but as you said, if used right it can pop out the pressed in areas.

Won't it also trap moisture in areas where it hasn't dispersed evenly?

thats why you gotta use a compressor and blast out any water/moisture and be careful where you use it

There are open cell and closed cell applications, the closed cell applications do not trap moisture or cause metal to rust.

Gonna try it on the front half, will dent the chassis rail and block it off at the ends and then apply some and see what happens. Pics will follow. Will do my welding/patching for the interior and then try the expanding foam and see what happens, thanks again Bez for hopefully a viable option.

^^Buy one of them small electric welding machines :D I welded up alot of stuff that i would of spent tons of money on in my skyline and it was done to my satisfaction, plenty of the work looking better than big garages bcuz they try to hurry to get paid.

Apparently it is not advisable to weld chassis rails, either fix or drill out and replace and reinforce. I am almost sure I can't get a replacement chassis rail so may just try to repair what I have.

Jason, i had horribly smashed chassis rails on the rx7. bugged me for years.

this year, two months ago. i checked the guy on the EMR after Mt Lambert that presses brand new van trays and fenders etc. i took measurements, the guy pressed all new chassis rails and i had a friend with a muffler shop (capable dude) do the welding and install.

he removed the full interior and prepped both inside and outside before installing the new rails.
looks friggin' awesome now and the car feels more rigid that ever before. its like a little scalextric car, next to zero flex and no sign of previous wear, tear or shoddy workmanship.

gimme a call/pm and we can meet if you want to see the finished product. pics don't seem to do justice. the price of the new rail pressings were affordable too...i'd recommend it to anyone with kinked/dinged rails.

Man that sounds awesome!!! How were the old ones removed, was it with a flat tipped bit or a tac weld removal tool? I bought one of those when I was removing the front radiator panel on the forester back when I just got it. Did you use cardboard and shaped it as I think mine are not straight, will have to check and see for sure though, I will be dropping all the hardlines in any event, car will be down longer but at least it will be done properly. Will be in contact with you soon.
