hmmm so i guess the question is if the Rav is worth the $31k price difference (for the base model)

These features alone makes the RAV4 worth it:
(9) Air Bags, ABS with BA (Brake Assist) & EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution), VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), HAC (Hill Start Assist Control).

You cannot compare the base Tucson GL ($237k) with the base RAV4 ($268). The base Tucson only has 2 airbags. You'd have to compare the Tucson GLS models with the RAV4 (all trims). The Tucson GL line is stripped of most of the safety features that's standard on the RAV4 (all trims).

So You need to compare the RAV4 base model with the GLS ($277,400) and the GLS Exec Pack ($310,500).

If someone has experience/knowledge of the Skoda Yeti, now is the time to bring it up since Tucson vs RAV4 is currently on the agenda. The Tiguan would have been an excellent choice but sadly with a size similar to a Daihatsu Terios little can be done with that SUV.

I actually test drove the tiguan to replace my rav4 but it came down to running costs for me. VW was quite a bit higher.

The new RAV4 service costs are lower than VW, but still much higher than my 2.4 SGV Limited.

RAV4 Service costs:
Level -A - $900 + VAT ; Alignment - $235 + VAT
Level -B - $998.61 + VAT
Level -C - $1868.29 + VAT ; Injector Cleaning - $650 + VAT
Level -D - $4113.32 + VAT

Checked out most of the S/CUV's recently on the market.
I disagree with Norstar, but obviously depends on personal opinion and requirements.

The Rav4 imho has a decent exterior with a nice refined drive. The larger size does aid in making one feel safe and the features in that category are better than others in the class. The handling isnt that great but more than sufficient for a vehicle in this category. Its easy to drive and has decent enough power and stopping ability. The interior killed it for me. I was looking at purchasing the fully loaded and the lack of features plus generally cheap and hard plastic feel inside was utterly dissapointing. The 'fake' leather etc just wasnt cutting it considering i'll be ultimately spending my time inside the vehicle. That added to Toyota's bleh service and high costs was enough to turn me away.
I chose the fully loaded Sportage, as obviously the feature list is much longer and safety wise its near comparable to the Rav4 and everything else in its class. The ride is a little stiffer but around corners you do feel more secure and less body roll, which i much prefer. The brakes are quite good and power is decent enough for an SUV.
Other options...
CRV - very easy to drive and comfortable. luxurious feel compared to asian counterparts. on flipside too pricy and imho very ugly.
CX-5 - decent exterior, more power and quite a few decent features, however not as comfy as the CRV and doesnt justify the price tag in any way.
XV - easily the best to drive, but similar to rav4 with cheap plastic interior
SGV - most solid perhaps, but harsh ride and dated design
Tucson - very similar to sportage, comes down to personal taste
ASX - bleh interior and performance not up to mark
Qashqai - surprisingly comfortable. perhaps best bang for the buck considering what you get for the price.

Of course the above is just my opinion and would vary from one person to the next. I was pretty set on the new rav until i sat in one, so my advice would be if you're interested, get a test drive and see which suits you best.

Ill agree with worksux as well..
The interior is the main fall with the new rav4.. Heck I prefer the temporary custom carbon fiber/brushed aluminum interior done in my 06 rav than the new one.

And the prior gauge cluster is much better than the new. But say what.. Thats just me. Comes down to personal preference in the end.

The interior of the RAV4 has always been a failure from the very first model to this latest one.

Well in the 06 model.. IMO it was one on the best looking ones back then compared to a 06 sportage, tucson, crv, outlander, xtrail, etc.

But point I was making is this: the 06 rav interior was much better than the 05 interior. But this current 2013 interior is just a step back compared to outgoing model, honestly.

Wait .. Is that the new interior of the 2013 RAV4 .... If it is then toyota is seriously sheiting on us. The interior for the us and Europe is way better. It's not amazing but miles and miles ahead of the crap we are getting.

No. It isn't. Read nah. It's the '06 model.
But really.. Is the 2013 that much better if at all? Below is the 2013 interior pics I took at the launch.

Our statements are similar in that I found fault with basically the same things you did. The only thing truly giving it points is the handing/performance and lots of standard safety features.

We have a 10 y/o daughter and the fact that all trims have all that safety gear makes it 'perfect'. No other Japanese/Korean SUV comes with all that in all trims. Everybody else gives you two airbags in the 'lo-spec' trim. I congratulate Toyota for taking that bold step and not making you have to pay for it.

I also saw in the Euro NCAP crash tests that ALL airbags deploy on a frontal impact which I think is perfect.

I actually prefer the flat dash of the 2013 over the outgoing models

The 03 interior is easy as fcuk to clean and simple to look at

My biggest problems with the Quashqai is that the rear seats dont slide, only back adjusts and sometimes I wish it had a little more power and the boot is a bit small. That said, the backseat is roomy, I'm 5,8 and a fat ass and I feel a bigger sense of space than in the cx5 and tiguan with the rear seats pushed right back. Best bang for buck, defiantly the Quashqai IMO.

Boyyyyyyyy  it maybe available yuhno...... but on special order

Everything I requested seem to add a month to the delivery time. I asked for a red, had to wait till next shipment, wanted 4wd had to special order it, requested a larger engine which ment I had to take a higher trim with leather seats and put that on special order :|

Neal and massy dropped the ball majorly with the Quashqai and the options available. They could have outsold the rav4 in the last quarter IMO if they made the options available more attractive.
