These features alone makes the RAV4 worth it:
(9) Air Bags, ABS with BA (Brake Assist) & EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution), VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), HAC (Hill Start Assist Control).
You cannot compare the base Tucson GL ($237k) with the base RAV4 ($268). The base Tucson only has 2 airbags. You'd have to compare the Tucson GLS models with the RAV4 (all trims). The Tucson GL line is stripped of most of the safety features that's standard on the RAV4 (all trims).
So You need to compare the RAV4 base model with the GLS ($277,400) and the GLS Exec Pack ($310,500).

I actually test drove the tiguan to replace my rav4 but it came down to running costs for me. VW was quite a bit higher.

The interior is the main fall with the new rav4.. Heck I prefer the temporary custom carbon fiber/brushed aluminum interior done in my 06 rav than the new one.
And the prior gauge cluster is much better than the new. But say what.. Thats just me. Comes down to personal preference in the end.

I disagree with Norstar, but obviously depends on personal opinion and requirements.
The Rav4 imho has a decent exterior with a nice refined drive. The larger size does aid in making one feel safe and the features in that category are better than others in the class. The handling isnt that great but more than sufficient for a vehicle in this category. Its easy to drive and has decent enough power and stopping ability. The interior killed it for me. I was looking at purchasing the fully loaded and the lack of features plus generally cheap and hard plastic feel inside was utterly dissapointing. The 'fake' leather etc just wasnt cutting it considering i'll be ultimately spending my time inside the vehicle. That added to Toyota's bleh service and high costs was enough to turn me away.
I chose the fully loaded Sportage, as obviously the feature list is much longer and safety wise its near comparable to the Rav4 and everything else in its class. The ride is a little stiffer but around corners you do feel more secure and less body roll, which i much prefer. The brakes are quite good and power is decent enough for an SUV.
Other options...
CRV - very easy to drive and comfortable. luxurious feel compared to asian counterparts. on flipside too pricy and imho very ugly.
CX-5 - decent exterior, more power and quite a few decent features, however not as comfy as the CRV and doesnt justify the price tag in any way.
XV - easily the best to drive, but similar to rav4 with cheap plastic interior
SGV - most solid perhaps, but harsh ride and dated design
Tucson - very similar to sportage, comes down to personal taste
ASX - bleh interior and performance not up to mark
Qashqai - surprisingly comfortable. perhaps best bang for the buck considering what you get for the price.
Of course the above is just my opinion and would vary from one person to the next. I was pretty set on the new rav until i sat in one, so my advice would be if you're interested, get a test drive and see which suits you best.

Our statements are similar in that I found fault with basically the same things you did. The only thing truly giving it points is the handing/performance and lots of standard safety features.
scotty_buttons wrote:No. It isn't. Read nah. It's the '06 model.
But really.. Is the 2013 that much better if at all? Below is the 2013 interior pics I took at the launch.

correct. though ultimately you and yours may choose the rav. not an option for me.

But point I was making is this: the 06 rav interior was much better than the 05 interior. But this current 2013 interior is just a step back compared to outgoing model, honestly.
