Trevor Bayne has MS but will continue to race in NASCAR

Image

Trevor Bayne has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis but will continue to race in NASCAR.

The Roush Fenway Racing driver was cleared by doctors and NASCAR after extensive testing at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Bayne said Tuesday he isn't taking medication and expects no changes in lifestyle.

He said he has experienced no symptoms since being sidelined for two months after numbness in his arm during a race at Texas Motor Speedway. That prompted Bayne's first trip to the Mayo Clinic, and his continued checkups led to doctors deciding he had MS.

Bayne had symptoms of blurred vision, nausea and fatigue, which led doctors initially to conclude he might have Lyme Disease on his elbow. Bayne said he learned he had MS this summer, a few weeks after winning at Iowa Speedway.

"I don't know if the two are connected," he said. "I'm not a doctor and I wouldn't want to make that call, but they wanted to do more research because I wasn't satisfied with not knowing as a competitive person and as a racer. We want to know how everything works and causes and effects, so I just kept going back."

CAREER: Bayne by the numbers

Roush Fenway Racing president Steve Newmark said it was Bayne's decision to reveal the news, and that it didn't impact his status with sponsors or the team.

"He was completely fine and cleared after it and the reality of it is if Trevor wasn't a race car driver and didn't have the means, he probably would never have been diagnosed," Newmark said. "It was through his determination of just regularly getting checked that it came to light."

Bayne, 22, became an overnight sensation in 2011 when he became the youngest winner of the Daytona 500, triumphing with the fabled Wood Brothers Racing team in only his second start in NASCAR's premier series.

"There are a lot more people in our community and in our world that can relate to somebody who is going through hard times and somebody who is winning races, who is winning championships, who has won the Daytona 500, who looks like he has it all together," said Bayne, who was married in June. "It looks like everything is going great, but how many people can relate to that? So, for me, going through something hard, that shows our true character."

Bayne, whose sister also has MS, has driven full time in the Nationwide Series this season and is ranked sixth in the standings with 20 top 10s in 32 starts. He said the diagnosis lifted a weight off his shoulders, but the uncertainty hadn't impacted his performance.

"What's impacted our season the most is how competitive the Nationwide Series is this year and how tough some of the competitors are," he said. "I feel like we've got to step up our game a little bit and get our cars a little better. I don't think it's the season any of us would have hoped for, but we've had some bright lights also with a win at Iowa."

Well it's the weekend that 43, 40, 36 men/women probably look forward to for the most part, but millions more don't again, for the most part

Ford EcoBoost 200, tonight, of course Crafton taking that one
Ford EcoBoost 300, tomorrow, could go either way but more seeing Dillon winning
Ford EcoBoost 400, Sunday, Johnson's to lose

(Championships of course)

Careers (seemingly) coming to an end
Jeff Burton, Bobby Labonte, Mark Martin, Ken Schrader

Leaving
Travis Pastrana, Juan Pablo Montoya

Mention
Dario Franchitti, sucks when it ends up being a doctor's call to end a career

Had the Chase format been under a 13-1 system (13 for 2013 due to SpinGate)

13 for highest Chaser
12 for 2nd highest Chaser & so forth until 1 for lowest finishing Chaser

1 bonus point for leading a lap
1 bonus point for leading the most laps
3 for winning the race
(max being 18 points)

Lets see what the 2013 version of those pics ends up being. 2/3rds complete. I do stand by my pick of Johnson (barring any mechanical failure)

2013 Chase results, had a 13-1 points system been used.

Well just to see the Lowe's 6 time commercial now. Still hoping 2014 we see a new 5x since it looks like we need one now. Congrats to Jimmie Johnson.

As they mention that Chad was with Jimmie for all his years, the question has to be asked (again) what if Ray had stuck with Jeff all those years? What if...what if...

It's just a number. Americans are too sentimental. Does anyone really think Dale Earnhardt is looking up from hell and wondering WTF? No. He and Lucifer are just chillin' with his 7 championships.

The million-dollar North Carolina home once owned by former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield before he was kicked off the land is scheduled to be burned to the ground as part of a fire training exercise.

The Catawba County Fire Marshal's Office says the 12,000-square-foot unfinished house will be burned down on Saturday.

Catawba Fire Chief Donald Robinson says the new owners no longer want the home that's worth $300,000.

In 2011, authorities say they found thousands of dollars in stolen goods in the home. Carolina Farm Credit received an order in 2012 transferring the land and buildings to the company. Court records show the bank bought the land for $1.7 million.

Mayfield was suspended from driving in 2009 after testing positive for methamphetamine. He is facing a variety of charges.

Winning might just mean everything in the Sprint Cup Series going forward.

According to a report in the Charlotte Observer, NASCAR is planning an overhaul of its points system that makes it a virtual lock for drivers to reach the Chase for the Championship by posting a win during the season's first 26 races.

The Chase field would reportedly increase from 12 to 16 drivers under the restructuring. If there were more than 16 winners during the "regular season," the 16 drivers with the most wins and highest point totals would qualify for the Chase. If there were less than 16 winners, the remaining spots would be comprised of drivers with the most points.

The 10-race Chase playoffs would then feature a round of eliminations, according to the report. The proposal has the eliminations taking place after the third, sixth and ninth races of the Chase.

The four drivers with the lowest point totals after those races would be eliminated, leaving the Sprint Cup champion to be determined by a winner-takes-all season finale between the final four remaining drivers at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

This Chase for the points system in NASCAR is crap. He who gets the most points wins the championship, whether through consistently high finishes and/or outright wins. No playoff foolishness.

F1 ditched that crap best 11 races finishes count for championship crap in the early 1990s and now they have come back with some crap races count for double points.

What is racing really coming to?

I would like to see them simply make it a 12-1 system as far as those in the Chase. Keep things tighter so that 1 bad finish wouldn't effectively completely screw you, eg Jeff Gordon 2012, Dale Earnhardt Jr 2013
