MG Man wrote:Question tho: why media blast a fibreglass shell? Not like i trying to uncover rust. Wrt the backbone, I wouldn't try to repair it. That is essentially the structure of the car. Lotus didnt exactly do a wholesome job from the start and trying to repair it is a false economy. I rather put my faith in a properly re-engineered Sypder chassis.

One more thing.....if you had the HSR, would you media blast the bodykit? I personally had planned to just rub it down and repaint. Your advice, as always, will be greatly valued

why media blast a fibreglass shell?... Quicker?... easier?... less gouging of substrate from abrasive disks?...
more accurate visual inspection after? Baking soda isn't used for rust removal.
Its major use is for paint, primer (and gelcoat!!!) removal. It's been used on boats and cars for years.
So you don't have to worry about damaging glass, door rubbers or chrome, etc.
IMHO I would still be careful around (remove) modern plastic headlights (and tail-lights) though.

Here's a 'Vette being Soda blasted for a restoration...
Link--> Soda Blasting - The Bare Essentials.
Vette Magazine wrote:Soda blasting will reveal any problem areas, such as previous repairs or "rotten" fiberglass. For a variety of reasons, some areas on Corvettes will simply degrade, leaving "hairy" patches that need to be addressed. Hand-sanding may not root these out.

I can see your point about a 28 year old chassis. Maybe a new one would be a safer bet on such an expensive restoration.

For the HSR I don't know if Soda blasting is available locally. AFAIK PanLand only works with Black Diamond.
In your case, "rub down & repaint" may be your only option right now.
Having three projects makes 'DIY Soda blasting' feasible for me... but I have to start from scratch...
in about 18 months... after I build my DIY Sandblast/Spray-booth... at least I have the 24" exhaust fan already.

It will be ready, if all goes according to plan. I might even do it commercially later.

BTW spot welder should arrive next week. Trying to install by mid-February if all goes well... 90 amp circuit req'd.
I don't want to 'hard-wire' a "fixed" installation, so I'm hunting a suitable "disconnect" (plug). Suggestions will be appreciated.

GroceryGetter is already 2 weeks behind schedule; so hoping to have all other tools & equipment by then too.
M900 upper body measuring system (uprights) should arrive with welder...
Up next, about 3-4 weeks of measurements and drawings... while the GSR gets MoT inspection & sticker.
