matte black was an old school racing trick......a matte black bonnet would cut glare off the bonnet.......as for matte black cars.......well not everybody cares for a shiny glossy car. Some of us like that industrial, stealth fighter look of evil

actually the car was still in the original paint when dad repainted it about 5 years ago.....the bonnet was a nice dull grey........I would have kept it as-was, with all the battle scars.......dad likes to wash and polish
