Re: New Vehicle Prices In Trinidad & Tobago

Postby acesinghit » January 8th, 2017, 12:06 am

Points to note on the Nissan Xtrail Hybrid (T32):

1. The MR20DD is paired with the RM31 electric motor to give enhanced performance especially acceleration vs the MR20DNE in the local Xtrail. I know the DD uses direct injection technology with intake and exhaust valve timing but I am not sure of the DNE version. By GA16DNE logic, it means the local units are regular multipoint fuel injection with no VVT at all.

MR20DD peak output (Hybrid):
145hp and 207Nm torque

RM31 peak output:
40hp and 160Nm torque

Combined output would be: 185hp and 367Nm torque.

MR20DNE peak output (local, Massy):
142hp and 201Nm torque

2. Both can safely use 91 RON fuel so our super at 92 RON is fine.

3. Both uses the updated Xtronic CVT transmission with 7-speed tiptronic in manual mode

4. In heavy traffic or at a standstill, the drivetrain depends on the power from the lithium-ion battery pack to power the electric motor which is housed in between the transmission and the engine via two separate clutches.

5. When the driver demands more performance especially on the open road e.g. Rapid acceleration or when you cross a certain speed (I think 60kmph) the engine kicks in to power the drive wheels.

6. While the engine is on, it recharges the battery pack and also, the said battery pack is charged every time you apply brakes.

7. So during a regular work week when school is out like Monday coming here and if you are leaving San Fernando and beyond to come into POS on early mornings, with an Xtrail Hybrid you can double your mileage (at a minimum) based on the amount of traffic you endure which means, you will be in electric only mode for quite a lot instead of sitting there in standstill traffic simply wasting fuel.

8. The 12V regular vehicle battery is located in the trunk above the or next to the rechargeable battery pack. I understand the size of the fuel tank in the Hybrid Xtrail is smaller for obvious reasons.

9. The oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin air filter, brake fluid, coolant, shocks, springs, rotors, brake pads and other body/ suspension parts are the same between the DD and DNE or Hybrid and non Hybrid Xtrails. The spark plugs are not shared so the DD requires a different plug to the DNE. The DD plug is NGK DILKAR7D11H. Both types are iridium and Nissan says can last up to 100,000kms.

10. It appears whether on electric mode or not, your odometer will continue to rise while driving so it would be difficult to determine true mileage in terms of changing your oil. To be safe, if you fill amsoil full synthetic motor oil which can go up to 20,000kms it means in theory you can change oil at 12 month and beyond intervals which dramatically reduces service costs especially if you use a K&N box filter (if available).

11. Hybrid xtrails are limited to a top speed of 180kmph however local non Hybrid T31 2.5 xtrails have a 240kmph speedometer but based on experience with the local 2.5 T31 model, even that version was also limited to 180kmph due to speed cut even though it had a 240kmph speedo. So I'm not sure if it's different for the local T32, maybe an owner can clarify if Nissan removed the speed limiter or not.

12. Due to less moving parts, it is said that the fwd only T32 Xtrail would be cheaper to maintain than the 4wd version. Seems obvious to me since no diff and driveshaft.

13. If the battery pack or electric motor is throwing a fault code/s you can simply continue to operate on engine only as the ECU would not re-engage the motor unless the fault is rectified. I am also hearing, if the electric motor or battery pack has a fault, the engine would not start. In some countries where Nissan sells these Hybrid Xtrails brand new, they guarantee the battery pack for a period of 10 years!

14. None of the Hybrid vehicles I saw comes with the 360 degree view camera system (ie. camera on each wing mirror and front grill), front dual powered seats, rear cargo cover and side/curtain airbags. The cargo cover can be easily procured on eBay though. Mug guards can also be procured on amazon and eBay as some come with and without them.

15. These Hybrid Xtrails come with Forward Emergency Braking with Forward Collision Alert system. Upon detection of an impending impact, the vehicle will alert the driver and come to a rest by automatic application of the brakes. Also, because of the vehicle's silence whilst in motion on electric mode, there is an audible alert/noise that would be emitted to warn pedestrians which would be especially useful in crowded areas like parking lots. You can switch this feature off but when switching off and restarting, I understand the system resets. Also, these Hybrid units have front and rear parking sensors. None of the local Xtrails in Massy have these features btw.

16. The Autech Hybrid model has a different front and rear bumper and some side flairing. It means the regular mud guards won't work and these bumpers would be harder to procure if damaged beyond repair so you may want to avoid the Autech model if you are very picky about potential concerns such as those. I will admit though, it is visually more appealing especially with the twin exhaust pipes at the rear.

17. Some Xtrails come with the integrated type Japanese touch screen display which is pressure to understand and replace so it is better to get a unit that already has the double DIN opening so you can install a nice Pioneer DVD deck or something similar especially if the unit is equipped with the rear view camera. Now I heard there is a language setting in the menu which can change Japanese to English but someone will have to confirm this for both the Drive Display on the instrument cluster and the touch screen interface on the dash.

18. Nissan says you cannot simply do work to the exhaust system, paint over the body or jump start the vehicle without properly disconnecting the battery pack. Also, Nissan advises, if involved in a collision and the vehicle is badly damaged, the battery can cause a fire and as such, owners/drivers ought to alert first responders to equip themselves with the relevant fire extinguishers should a fire occur for they may not be able to immediately assess that the vehicle is a Hybrid one.

So if I missed anything please feel free to add more. If stuff mentioned are inaccurate by all means please share the information so I can stand corrected and be more educated on the vehicle.

Dry clutch DCT gets wrecked with heat, from traffic stop and go and crawling. The electric motor handles this function so clutches dont have engage and disengage constantly at low speeds.

What sort of fuel economy you seeing?

Average 750Kms on 34 litres ($120)

Just some price updates:

Toyota:
Corolla Xli (basic) - $210,000
Corolla Gli (fully loaded) - $235,000

Suzuki:
Baleno GL+ - $154,950
Baleno GLX - $169,950

Went inquiring recently, as much as I want the corolla, I have other priorities to see about so I may stick with a Baleno, hoping for a Vitara at best.

If I had the money I would have gone back Honda, however, it should be noted that the Corolla is one solid ride!

Ok, I've depressed myself there

If you guys are worrying about space, it is a tad bigger than the swift. Don't let looks fool you. When I went into Lifestyle I walked past the Baleno, until the sales rep sat me in one. Even though it's a 1.4, there is a lot less car so it could actually be a bit of fun

Imagine the cheapest new car you can buy is a Chevy spark 1.4 @ $140k

If one is looking to purchase one of the cheaper new cars on the market, there are quite a few options available such as the Fiesta 1.5, Accent 1.6, Rio 1.4, Sonic 1.6 and Mazda2 1.5. The versa 1.5 and baleno 1.4 are made in India. For $150k you can get the Accent GLS fully loaded. That little car has interior space thato will surprise you and it's quick! Saw the 2017 Sonic @ GCM over the holidays and that car is feature packed with the 8" MyLink touch screen display amongst other features and it has a 1.6 engine with twin valve timing. The mazda2 despite having a 1.5 is another fun car. Check out those options before settling on an Indian made car with smaller displacement.

Another thing, one may not agree with the prices of the Corolla but those cars still sell despite the archaic equipment listing. You see this term called Resale Value and Reliability? To some people, it's all that matters and that Corolla could still increase to $260k and it would still sell. It's pretty much a car that your family will enjoy for years upon years and it would be king in the used car market in time to come.

Really good points here. Everyone has their own opinion but the accent has been proving itself as good value in multiple markets in it's segment. The sonic looks like a solid choice as well but slightly lagging in sales volume here, the redesign/update looks decent imo and it's up there in safety as well. My top choices would have included the honda fit which is surprisingly quick even with base engine and is rated high in class but the price is now ridiculous to be honest. I didn't see any suzuki swifts at the barataria showroom today, not sure whats going on with that, I really hope they keep stocking it and the baleno is not a replacement but just an addition to their fleet.

I think there is a redesigned Swift that is suppose to be released soon... Not sure how long it will take to make it here though
I find the Hyundai accent a bit weak... Car feels fragile... And rear headroom is a bit lacking.
Not sure what the base model lancer is selling for now. Also Honda city CNG might be an option to consider

I doubt .... The turbo tucson did not get a good reception at all and sales are uber slow, customers still preferred the 2.0 NA.

Did potential buyers also look into the vehicle and see the questionable reliability of the transmission attached to the engine... The only trans option that is available I think...

It's a wait and see on that dct from hyundai, so far it seems to be a let down and far from the best on the market as reported in various reviews on the tucson and veloster turbo. I think the mistake was hyundai developing their own dct but they have proven to learn from their mistakes relatively fast. So it may end up being a win win situation with them eventually pumping out a really good dct and saving money with in house development and manufacturing. A better move may have been a really good 8 speed auto imo paired to their turbo's and prevent the dct drama and bad press reviews.

Are sales slow or are they just not stocking it??
My coworker ordered a Turbo Tuscon since October last year, made the DP, was promised it in January, sold her existing car and now have to rent a car to come to work as they have told her February she will get it.

Insider info told me they not selling well so they really slowed (may have stopped) down orders for the turbo dramatically.
Cant be 100% tho as this is second hand info

Went to look at the Mustang. All the salesman didn't do was to run me from the showroom. If you see his stink attitude. Like if people in short pants and slippers (not even rubber slippers eh) can't buy one. Had to come and apologise after though.

Yeah car sales figures last year were stable but sales of economy and lower priced vehicles went up and higher end, luxury sales went down.

Another yeah and the sales numbers should start dropping as well.

The ANSA reps get training on spotting who they should spend time on and who not to waste time on, sales lady came at me sized me up, guessed my profession and offered me a test drive before I even asked.

Sometimes they can get it wrong.
