Apparently they offer a warranty period. Not sure how much. And they will also be doing maintenance as well.
They plan to import more and currently organizing the infrastructure for charging stations too.
Don't think MVT/VAT was paid either. not sure about duty.

As far as I understand, the tesla exceeds the Kw rating required for this exemption.

(b) a used electric

270 *30 is only $8,100
That's absolutely nothing when compared to it's $117,250 to clear customs.

(assuming US$70,000 base price and 6.7 exchange rate)

I agree. That's why to me this whole electric and hybrid tax exemption, in its current implementation, is weak. It really has not been the incentive this and the last govt act like it is. For hybrid and electric powertrain adoption to take place it has to make economic sense to buyers. I recently purchased a vehicle and explored these options.. I could not identify one hybrid or electric vehicle that made financial sense over an internal combustion counterpart at the same price point / segment.

It actually makes a significant difference with a regular hybrid.

For example:
RORO Prius - USD$9,000 (CIF)
Regular: TT$118,300.50
Exempt: TT$82,620.00

That's a little over $35,000 right there.
Big difference to me.

Now compare that with the cost of a RORO internal combustion vehicle of similar age, size and features. Admittedly I only looked at new vehicle costs, although I expect the same conclusion. Even factoring in the savings in fuel, it would take years to break even vs a comparable gas vehicle. Yes I agree that the legislation provides some savings, but what im saying is that it's not enough savings to justify buying say a prius vs a corolla, even with the fuel savings. Or even broader, an "x segment hybrid / electric vehicle" vs an "x segment gas vehicle" of comparable trim.

Abroad they realise the savings over time with their high gas prices, but in our market from what i calculated it would take longer than practical to break even. Moreso in lower segment vehicles which are available locally with IC engine sizes 1.6 and below. I hope im getting my issue across

Sure, let's compare the price to a Corolla Axio, which has a smaller engine, less tech, and less features.

CIF - $8,000 USD (Assuming same 6.7 exchange rate)
Engine Size 1500CC
Customs Duty - 13,600
MVT - 5,625
VAT - 11,043.75

OTR Cost - $84,668.75

I'm not trying to be difficult here, but it does make a big difference.

Yea man I'm not taking it offensively. It's surprising to me that the CIF values of similarly aged and specd prius vs corolla are so close! Especially considering their new prices, but as i said, i wasnt looking at a used RORO personally so didnt take them into consideration. The very similar and low CIF of these obviously increases the attractiveness of the exemption, however, the reality is for new vehicles there is a wide gap between the cost of a hybrid / electric vehicle and its gas counterpart. This gap, even with the current exemption and vehicle fuel economy savings, does not close.

The gap really widens when you look at new prices, for example a new corolla at CIF 20k usd vs a new prius at CIF 25k usd.. you're then looking at an OTR difference of over 40k ttd even with the exemption.. and these are generous cif prices. You wont make that difference back on fuel savings in any practical period of time. What incentive is there then to buy the prius? You can also look at other segments like an all electric nissan leaf vs a compact like a yaris or fit and see the same. Practically this legislation does not look further than these segments as its limited to >1.8 but as this is increasing to 2.0 one can look further. You can also look at how the local dealerships adjusted to the legislation for new prices, yaris at 176 and the baby prius c at 239, or the corolla at 215 and the prius at 359.

Seeing that the MVT on these gas vehicles is ~900usd, that + VAT is all that the legislation is going to benefit anyone. So long as the price of the hybrid exceeds that in cif + associated customs duties (and they do, often by several thousand usd), the hybrid begins to look less attractive.. eventually to the point that it doesnt make sense.
