Well I just got an email from SBT claiming "No taxes at all on hybrids less than 2000cc"
Price was quoted in TT dollars and reflected an exchange rate of about 6.7

Can't rely on sales people though.
Please someone in customs. Please answer this question!

If this is truly the case expect to hybrid for so, and if they really allowing 1998cc engines we should start to see all sorts of cool stuff like the Outlander http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com.au/vehicles/outlander/specifications/outlander-phev, and the Vezel Hybrid for low 200k prices

^^^ you really think so? I called a sales rep at massy yesterday and we spoke about the xtrail hybrid. He said massy was looking to bring it down for some time now but never did. They have to see if the vehicle was suitable for the market, similar to what they did before selling the new sentra. By the way, the sales rep also said that xtrail prices would increase due to the foreign exchange rate, but i more feel is to be nasty and dig out ppl eye as more ppl may flock for the xtrail as its under 2000cc.

If that logic applies, then it may be a while before other folks bring down their hybrids. Plus, you really think these ppl gonna push hybrids? Trinis have money and they will still buy the other vehicles. Since when car dealers does cater for the needs and demands of john public?

And also, does anyone know the cost of maintenance of these hybrids? Ill tell you one thing... Batteries have a certain life, especially rechargeable batteries, so when the batteries begin to go in the hybrid, be prepared to fork out some serious $$$$ to have them replaced.

Nah not the outlander. Hybrids and electric tax free limited to 1999cc or less AND it has to be less than 179hp. Outlander is 200.

I can only speak for the Prius as this is the only car that I have researched.

The hybrid drivetrain requires no different maintenance than a regular vehicle. The electric side of the powertrain requires zero maintenance and since the engine is used less than a regular car, oil changes can usually be stretched out a bit longer. Prius batteries thus far have been known to exceed way past the 10 year life span as their are Prii from Gen 1 that still use their original batteries. Used batteries can be found in scrapyards in the US for roughly US$500. A brand new battery for a Gen 3 Prius is roughly US$4,000, but since there have been taxis in the US raking up way past 400,000 miles, I don't think that's something you'll have to worry about for quite a while.

Prius batterys have been tested for up to 180k miles. In Trinidad heat a little less. Also probably never have to change brake pads if you drive normally. Thing is if the batteries start diminishing then the car still works, the car will just run more on the engine rather than the batteries.

But the main problem is how freakin ugly that new Prius is .... I seriously wonder what Toyota designers were smoking ...

Is it combined theoretical max HP or just gas engine HP that this applies to?

Honestly I think it will be third party importers with foreign new hybrids who will really start supplying the market more than the big corporates, at least at first. There are several people selling Navaras and Prados who will be looking to diversify and willing to bring in what the public wants. Prius aside other manufacturers hybrids tend to have premium features as well so you're getting a better version than the base model non hybrid version right off the bat, and for a good price too (we hope).

Good day.
Does anyone know the current price for a Hyundia H-100 and Kia K-2700. Also, which one is a better buy. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Yes but even tho the foreign used dealers may bring in the hybrids, are they qualified to service them? Who usually services these vehicles locally?

I don't think there was MVT on the city either. PP had removed it before I believe. You'll have to search for budgets from 2013/2014 etc. PP might have stipulated that no MVT for hybrids or CNG vehicles with engines of a certain size. PNM probably just increased the size of engines exempt from the tax hence the City has no change in price because it already fell under the size set by the PP.

I'm pretty sure the PP removed the MVT from CNG & hybrid vehicles and either didn't have an engine size restriction but, I seem to remember it being up to 2999cc and all the PNM has done is reduce the engines allowed to 1999 and below.

I'm looking thru previous budget statements and I can't seem to find the exmption on CNG vehicles. Can find all here:

http://www.finance.gov.tt/category/budget-statement/

Saw this in 2015 Budget:
"I propose with effect from January 1, 2015 to
exempt motor vehicle tax and VAT on new or
used hybrid and electric-powered vehicles not
older than 2 years for a period of 5 years for
private or commercial use."

Last year it became hybrid no older than 4 years up to 1799cc.
That's when TTTL ran their Christmas ad announcing no VAT or MVT on the Prius

We still hadda wait for clarification from colm as he said no taxes on CNG, Hybrid and electric. Duty is a "tax" that is payable to customs.

^^^ This.
He said NO TAX so that should include duties as well which for that engine size should be 25%.

We have some Honda City in our fleet at this moment. It drives well but the sucker drinks super. Haven't had the opportunity to use the CNG due to the lack of refuelling depots on my side.

What we have is a 1.5 SOHC (Thai Import).

Trunk space... limited. Definitely cant go Pricesmart.

Nah not possible ... all car makers going turbo and downsizing, Even toyota now has a 1.2 turbo which will soon be on some models.

Called Maska who said the Fortuner increased from $515k to $625. Can anyone explain how a 50% increase in tax translates to a $110k increase in total price?
