FRONTIER NAVARA with CUMMINS

Hoping to gauge customer interest, Nissan is displaying a “project” version of its Frontier mid-size pickup with a 2.8-liter Cummins four-cylinder diesel engine.


The Japanese brand is making a big push into the light-duty diesel truck market with its new Titan, which is set to sell with a 5.0-liter Cummins diesel powertplant when it arrives. But the brand isn’t convinced that it will be enough to offer a single diesel truck. The Frontier being shown today isn’t necessarily going to be built, but it might be if the brand decides there is enough demand.

“We hope consumers in Chicago and across the U.S. will let us know what they think of the prospects of a diesel engine in this segment,” said Nissan product planning vice president Pierre Loing.



The four-cylinder engine makes approximately 200 hp and over 350 lb-ft of torque and is slotted into a truck heavily based on the 2014 Frontier Desert Runner. A ZF eight-speed automatic transmission handles shifting duty sent to the rear wheels.

“Nissan has always valued the mid-size pickup segment, and with this technical study project, we are looking to explore what is possible for the next-generation Frontier,” said Nissan truck boss Fred Diaz. “We are always looking for ways to engage our customers, innovate and take the segment in an evolutionary stance.

for some of the trucks that carry their engines, they offer 7 year warranty /500,000miles on it etc...

Those warranties would apply to the big rigs and also out of the USA .... Not for the smaller lines

Cummins engines are built to withstand pressure, just as it's competitors Detroit diesel, international, caterpillar etc. these engines are usually used in heavy equipment and long hours machines such as generators. A yd25, zd30, td27, qd32 even the long lasting Ld20/28, same exposure, cannot out last a cummins engine. Proven and tested.

I once witnessed them testing some stuff at the Indiana facility .... Awesome stuff

im sure the cummins name is just there to drum up interest in the usdm because they are so slow to adopt diesel vehicles.

a navara engine cost bout 40-50k "i think" how much will a cummins engine cost?
other than the engine its just another navara with some decals and alloy wheels...IMO its like buying a production car from a Tuner shop you pay mostly for the brand

Also because summer 2014 Chevy is introducing the Checy Colorado with a diesel engine... I think the first batch is already sold-out on pre-orders... hence Nissan's "new" venture.

Cummins diesel engines is top of de line engines...u could tune dem to make mad power...drove a dodge pickup a while back with a cummins with a performance chip...dat thing surprised the hell out of me...i slam on de gas pedal and before i know it i done hit 100mph...real boss performance for a 3/4 ton truck.

That's fun and all but given local Navara drivers 99% sure to have bought their lisence, I'd rather we never see this locally.

I would understand this engine option for a larger work related vehicle. He smaller frontiers and family navaras not going to stay long enough and do as much work to warrant the upgrade .
. Years ago I was contemplating a cummins in our disco 1. He smallest option hey had was a huge 4 cylinder that wohld have weighed down he front. The durability attracted me, but the practicallity of the weight saw hat idea scrapped.
Any vehicle they putting that engine in should require a heavy t license to use. Not necessary for anyhing lighter
