Mitsubishi suspend WRC programme
Tentative 2008 return scheduled

Mitsubishi's Dakar programme to remain

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has announced that it has decided to suspend participation in the FIA World Rally Championship series from 2006.

With the Mitsubishi Motors Revitalization Plan as a basis, MMC has made a solid start toward revitalizing its business operations. However, to strengthen and build upon this base, MMC realizes that it must focus management resources on the continued promotion of the revitalization plan.

Mitsubishi Motors hopes to return to the WRC Championship series from 2008, after the completion of the 3-year revitalization plan, which covers fiscal 2005 to 2007.

This decision however does not extend to MMC's efforts in the Dakar Rally. Mitsubishi Motors will continue to compete in this event.

Starting with an overall championship in the Safari Rally in 1974, the Mitsubishi WRC Team has accomplished a spectacular 34 wins in the WRC series. The team won the drivers' title 4 consecutive years from 1996 to 1999, and won the prestigious manufacturers' title in 1998.

I don't understand what all the glee is about, Mitsubishi hasn't been really competitive in the WRC since the what 2003 season? Since then they've been trying to penetrate the USDM market with the EVO and at the same time battling litigation for something that I really can't remember.

This was expected, it's the same reason why Nissan stopped competing in the WRC so many years ago

...but the last few rallies were great for them. the evo was very competitive with some stage wins.

what i sad about is the limited amount of factory teams in WRC.

agreed...they have their priorities. Let them restructure their business...then when they can allocate the proper funds for research and development...they come back to WRC full force.

Besides Ford and Subaru I don't think there are any other factory teams, the new rules are quite fcuked up. I don't see how this is going to help the sport as development will all but grind to a hault :( Mitsu never really came back to the lime light in the WRC since Tommy left. But better they take a holiday instead of going on till they shut down all together. Would be nice to see them in the runnings come 2008.

All factory teams regrouping...
GM and Ford USA in deep financial doodoo as well.
Hope it doesn't affect Ford's WRC effort in 2006/2007.

As for Mitsubishi, lets wait for E10 in late 2006/2007.
Then maybe a WRC re-entry in 2008 :?:
