Help Datsun 1500 engine problems

Advice needed:
Problems:
Car moves lazy on second and third gear on the flat and dead on inclines, even without load
Engine backfires - rarely - from the carburetor
Work done:
Datsun 1500 engine recently installed
Changed head gasket
Engine came with Weber 32/36 carb
Adjusted valves according to manufacturer spec
Cleaned and serviced carburetor
Checked timing
Changed fluids
Changed plugs
Tests for vacuum leaks - none
Car comes with electronic distributor, what tests can be done to verify the operation of the distributor ? any advice ?
