Almera stalling in reverse on hills! - Please help

Postby CD4Accord » August 21st, 2011, 4:36 am

Hi everyone...
I am trying to help out my aunt who has a PBH local almera.. qg16 engine.. Automatic trans

What is happening is that if you are parked facing downhill on an incline (even a very slight one)... If you put the car in reverse as soon as you touch the gas, the vehicle cuts off and you have to start the engine again..
It does not stall as soon as you engage reverse, but only stalls when you press the accelerator trying to reverse..

On the other hand, if its flat road, you can reverse all day no trouble... I assume it has something to do with whenever reverse gear is force to work hard (eg. taking the car up an incline)

I tried asking around but no one really seems to know what the problem is on this.. The vehicle isnt throwing an engine light or transmission light so there are no codes to read..

Does anyone know any anything about this unique problem and any possible solution?

Thanks

Well of course I plan on getting it scanned for her, but does anyone know where is a good place to do that sort of thing? A lot of people use scanning as an excuse to try to take your head and tell you that more things wrong than really are...

what do you mean it stalls? The car literally shuts off or bogs and dies?
If it shuts off and the car drives fine on flat roads, sounds like an electrical issue. Checked harness?

Is the engine mounts good?
My far fetched guess: An engine mount (or multiple) are worn and allowing excessive engine movement. Engine rocks, tips harness and boom car shuts off.

It is a sudden shutdown, once you press the gas to go uphill in reverse... No bucking or bogging etc..

Concerning the mounts, they may be a bit worn but wouldnt that also be affected when accelerating going forward in drive gears?

I agree that it is probably electrical, but I am having trouble finding someone who has seen this sort of issue before to diagnose it..

not really. Driving in reverse coupled with the incline of the hill could be enough to rock the engine to tweak the harness.

Electrical issues are fun

No problems at all when going forward, only happens in reverse on inclines...
It is possible that the mounts are worn but changing that may not solve the problem.. The harness really shouldn't be susceptible to engine movement anyway..

I feel this one go be a serious headache to fix

Sounds like a fuel issue. Check all items fuel related. Although the other responses given here are indeed correct, a stall like that would mean that gas is not going to the engine at the angle the vehicle is at when uphill.

Interesting idea about fuel, but I don't really see why the vehicle will not get fuel when the tank is higher up the hill than the engine..
I would expect fuel issues to show up the other way around maybe... Trying to go UP a steel hill forwards..

Also, we have no fuel issues if idling in reverse on a hill.. Its just the moment you put your foot down on the gas...
Im hoping to have a word with someone down at N+M seeing as it was a local car but sometimes they dont like to advise without you paying $$$
