abs light

Postby learningcars1 » April 16th, 2022, 4:26 pm

hi all
so my abs came on and i went to get it scanned. it said left rear. got the sensor changed and the light came back on. changed the sensor again (same day) and the light was gone! :D YAY
a little after 1 week of driving the light came back on again :( my mechanic said that if the light was to come back on again, it could be the bearing gone bad. how can i be sure its the bearing? is the vehicle safe to drive in the interim? i have a very busy schedule ahead, can i put off the mehanic visit for a bit? any help is appreciated!
the car is driving like normal, no issue, just the abs light is on again. can it be bearing?

It would help to know what vehicle it is.

Generally it is safe once you don't drive hard enough to require the intervention of abs.

I wouldn't jump straight to wheel bearing if the sensor keeps failing... But not all vehicles are the same.

You changed the sensor for a new or used?
Resetting the light was done via battery or scanner?
If the sensor was water damaged was the housing cleaned?
I have seen where a bad wheel bearing can cause the sensor to still show as being faulty.

i think the mechanic put in a used one. when he put in the new sensor, the light came off for itself.
i dont think it was water damaged, i dont ever go through water.
if its the bearing, what other signs can i look out for besides a failing abs?

Generally a failing wheel bearing starts to hum/growl while driving or emit some type of repetitive sound.
Sometimes cheap hard compound tyres emit a similar sound.

I'm making the assumption that all the tyres on your vehicle are the same size.

The only way I can see a failing wheel bearing causing the sensor to fail is if the hub can wobble enough while driving for it to contact and damage the sensor; you will need to observe the previous sensor to see if this is the case. Other than that it might not be properly detecting the speed due to the wobble/harmonics, in which case the sensor is ok and the bearing is failing.

Not sure if the mechanic has cleaned the sensor at all

Since the light came on does it remain on everytime you start the vehicle
