WTK--Easiest way to clean these rims w/o blasting

Postby X_Factor » August 27th, 2015, 2:37 pm

So, i bought some used rims, i know i over paid but the fella was in a real jam...

so i cant afford media blasting, so whats the best way to get them ready for painting?
Any ideas besides sandpaper and alot of elbow grease?

All 4 off them are in this condition more or less

OK so what I did when I was refinishing my rims on a budget... I pressure washed the rim as best as I could first using purple blaster. Then I used wonder (rust remover) to clean up as much as possible. Used a bit of paint remover on middle to remove coating and then sanded lightly on rim face. Painted rim and then used a drill and cloth polisher bit and some mothers aluminum polish on lips. Took a lot of elbow grease and time but saved some $$.

remove tyre from rim..
power wash to remove heavy stuff..
soak and scrub in purple blaster and breeze mixture to get out the grease
wash with the wonder rust remover or lye if you desire something strong.
rinse off with baking soda to stop the lye.
sand with brass wire wheel attachment for your drill or if heavily rusted use the steel wheel for a grinder (with a grinder of course)

once clean use some polishing compound and a green brillo pad and some elbow grease
once you get it to how you want it finish it up with some silvo (silver polish) or autosol.

mask with tape and paint.
