Power window issues

Postby volcanosnowstorm » July 28th, 2013, 10:42 am

Hey guys, some power window issues. I'll get straight to it.

Problem:
Mazda Familia wagon - passenger side stopped working a while ago.
Replaced the regulator (not switch), worked for a while then stopped again.
Got a new regulator and switch for the passenger's side this time, should I replace the driver's side switch as well? (not sure if this would affect the operation)

Symptoms:
Passenger side switch up: I hear and physically feel the regulator activated though nothing happens (window is right up)
Passenger side switch down: nothing happens, no sound or jerk of the regulator
Driver side switch up: nothing happens, no sound or jerk of the regulator
Driver side switch down: nothing happens, no sound or jerk of the regulator

All other windows work fine from both their individual switches and the driver's side switch. Any advice? I don't want to swap in a new switch and regulator and have the regulator die in a couple days again.

Sounding like an electrical problem. try tapping the motor then press the switch down while pushing down the glass.

Just tried it. Nothing happening :/ even tried disconnecting the switch and jumping the leads to send signals to the motor with the same result. Also tried with the driver's side panel disconnected - all attempts result in the same behaviour as described in my first post.

I have a replacement switch and regulator eh, just I don't want to change the regulator again to find out that something on the driver's side switch is causing the regulator on the passenger side to go bad.

Is that possible?

Also I just tried the replacement switch on the regulator that's in the door now - same thing happening as before.

Like I said, I don't want to put in a new regulator and find out the driver's side switch is what's causing it to go bad.

I think the wires are your problem. If you know how to test for continuity then you should do a test on the wires going from the passenger side to the driver side switch. BTW you said you tested the window with one if the switches disconnected, this is an improper way to test the window because the switches are 2 way switches so if one is disconnected the circuit is broken. The other thing you did wrong is jumping the leads to the motor, the proper way to test a motor is to apply power to one wire and ground to the other and the motor should move and to make the motor move in the other direction you switch around the power and ground wires. Let me know the results of you tests so that I can further assist you.

Didn't test the motor or for continuity just yet, but I think I may have found the problem. Taking apart the driver's side switch, I found that under the guts of the rocker switch for the passenger's side (on the driver's side panel) there are two (what seem like spring loaded) switches (looks like attachment). One of them clicks when I press it, the other doesn't. Seems like that's damaged. To avoid getting a whole new unit, I was thinking about wiring the passenger side to the driver's side switch (allowing control of both windows using the driver's switch for the driver's window). Am I right? I don't know which wires though.

Also, isn't it true that if there is continuity between contacts (like the pages from the manual suggest) wouldn't I also find continuity between different points on either side? Unless I disconnect both switches? Would that work to test?

This one looked and tested like this.

From service manual (doesn't seem right to me - looked all over for the harness I have, but can't find the relevant diagram)

pic stolen from google - forgot to take actual pic at this point. Under that sliding part of the rocker switch is the damaged springloaded switch.

Well I don't test wires like that but I guess it works the same way. So now that you found your problem my best advice to you is to replace your switch with the original switch. Each switch is designed to handle the current of one window if you bridge the switch you can create more problems than you think. Trust me, it might work for a little while and then you will face the effects.

Sounds about right... Didn't stop to think about damage to the switch itself. I guess I'll have to get a new one. Thanks for the advice!

Having some issues where my power window on the passenger side is sticking. Is an electrician the best bet to get this sorted out ?

Spray some WD40 or silicone lube in the window tracks. Also, ensure that the glass is still seated properly in the plastic clips in the window regulator. If the glass comes out of a clip, it can tilt and stick in the tracks.

If the window still sticks after doing the above, then it is most likely an electrical problem.
