most of the current pinging problems u will see currently are due to insufficient octane or a combination of low octane and heat. The average person can't afford premium gas right now and even that was not sufficient for some of the higher performance vehicles.
Changing head and block? Why, to fix a carbonised engine? Shaving piston? To reduce compression? Will also cause a loss of power across the board and reduced fuel economy. Adjusting the timing at certain points in the ecu programing can alleviate or remove pining without affecting engine performance in other areas.
The vast majority of the F/U cars were designed for a much higher quality fuel than what we get here. hence their tuning is different.
flashing or chipping the ecu can correct this tuning for our gas octane/quality.
just stand on the side of the road and listen to cars as they pass by at around 12 noon to 3~4pm on your hot days. pinging like that, and in traffic to, just moving up to meet the next car, pinging. Running AC helps because it also keeps the engine cooler due to the fans working all the time.
Low temp thermostats work too but u have to know a bit about your car to choose the right temp, else u can go too low and suffer from essentially all the issues of not having a thermostat. This can also be corrected in tuning by adjusting the cold start tables, essentially u tell the engine that its warmed up at a lower temp.
Using products like heat wrap can reduce the under hood temps as well. CAI help but u have to insulate it to prevent heat-soak else its the same crap in traffic, the intake air wont be much cooler.
