Tiida engine pinking with both super and premium

Postby Hinds » November 24th, 2012, 7:05 am

I have a 2006 tiida hatch 1.5 cvt RORO, the engine has been pinking for a while now when i accelerate, typically around 30km or so, it eases up then again around 60km, once I accelerate passed that the noise stops. I carried it by my padna's mechanic to have the timing adjusted and that didn't help up. Had the spark plugs changed and injectors cleaned and got the same result. Used both premium and super...no ease up. This rel frustrating I need some help!

I don't know about the Nissan engines, but when that was happening with my car, it was the mass-air flow sensor was faulty and had to be replaced. You should get a diagnostic done. That should steer you in the right direction.

I had a diagnostic done, no fault codes came up

Never Had experience with nissan cars, but does the engine have sufficient oil?

Yeah there is enough oil I changed it recently...I spoke to a guy who had similar problems and he recommended resetting the ECU so i'll have someone take a look at that for me tomorrow...hopefully it works

Ok so the ECU reset didn't work, the mechanic I went by said that the fuel filter is probably clogged and starving the engine of gas...I'm a bit skeptical because it doesn't make sense to me that a lean mixture could cause spark knock, I assume with a lean mixture the engine would lack power but that is not the case with me it's just noisy...idk maybe he just wants my $ and trying to lead me in circles (corruption anywhere u go in Trinidad). I'm thinking two things, maybe something is going on with the exhaust and causing a back pressure to the engine or I have a carbon build up in the cylinder causing the fuel auto ignite and ping. Any help would be nice??

dude when u replace the plugs, did you observe the HEAT RANGE NUMBER? u may have put a hotter/colder plug? It has a Spark Plug Thread here, take a read

Detonation when the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder explodes, instead of burning rapidly.
(To be really technical, detonation is when the flame front moving through the cylinder exceeds
the speed of sound.)

This is bad for two main reasons:

1) The sudden shock load can break parts - the repeated shock loads of constant detonation is like running a jackhammer in your engine.
2) The temperature inside a detonating cylinder is much hotter than normal, and can get hot enough to melt aluminum.

Symptoms of detonation:

1) A loud pinging or rattle/knocking noise. It sounds like a bunch of marbles inside a tin can. (This is why detonation is commonly called "knock")
2) Higher than normal exhaust gas temperatures
3) Little "flyspecks" of aluminum on spark plug center electrodes and the center insulator. This is the dead giveaway indicator for detonation. Examine your plugs with a magnifying glass. Little balls of aluminum clinging to the plugs means that you are detonating.
(It's aluminum from the pistons being vaporized and condensing on the plugs)
4) Engine damage (holes in pistons, melted spark plug ground electrodes, etc.

Causes of detonation:

1) Low octane fuel
2) High static compression ratio
3) High boost levels
4) Excessive spark advance
5) Lean fuel mixture (may be insufficient fuel pump capacity/pressure, insufficient
injector flow, air flow sensor out of range)
6) High inlet air temperature / low air density

here is some thing you can try, replace you knock sensor, that is responsible for advancing the ignition timing.

Wouldn't a faulty knock sensor show up as a error code on the diagnostic machine? I'm asking because a diagnostic was done and no error codes came up...

have the same problem with mine.
got scanned (no error codes ), changed plugs to a colder plug, tried premium, cleaned injectors, throttle body, reset ecu, mechanic said that the catalytic convertor maybe clogged but i already spent so much $ and nothing helped so any advice will be appreciated

Yeah a guy told me the same thing about the cat converter. The oil is not an issue it's definitely engine pinging n not an engine component rattle...all the signs lead to it.

Hopefully this weekend if I get some time I'll open up the fuel tank and clean the fuel filter myself and see if I get any luck, my wallet is just as exhausted as I am.

did your mechanical say to clean the cat converter or to remove it? mine said to remove it but wouldn't that send a error code?

THIS :!:

According to the internet, the Tiida engine HR15DE uses Denso plug FXE20HE11, which is the NGK DF6H-11A or NGK DF6H11A.

It is a long reach plug that looks similar to the K16HPR-U11 or LFR5A11 plug that the QG15/16 engine uses, but the HR15DE engine CANNOT use a Denso "16" or NGK "5" plug as these are too "hot" for this engine type.

Please ensure that your mechanic used the correct plugs.

Did anybody ever solve this problem? Was it an overheating issue?

Had a similar problem with my Y12 wingroad same engine different transmission did everything you did with no luck until I changed my fan belt. The noise got a lot less and then I read some where on the net about cleaning the EGR valve after this was done there was no pinging, it has been about 2 years now and sill no problem I currently use Castrol edge 10w 30 motor oil and my engine just cross 210000 km and work fine no problems.Hope this helps
