Clutch Fluid colour

Postby §ephiroth » March 14th, 2009, 3:22 pm

I recently changed my clutch system parts(Rubbers piston etc) Because of a problem i was having. The fluid was also extremely Black.........Now after fresh clutch fluid new parts. I find my clutch fluid going black again... Is this a normal thing? I was thinking that the seal on top of the cover of the clutch cylinder was causing it(the black rubber under the cover) Dunno if is some sort of chemical reaction to clutch fluid. My thinking was the same way it takes off paint, it probably has the same effect with the rubber material.

Thanks for all the help and advice in advance

With the previous car that I had for 10 years (and 343,000km), I never had to replace any rubbers, etc.

I used to flush out the old fluid at the same time when I was flushing out the brake fluid, which was every 20,000km.

People seem to forget about replacing the clutch fluid on a regular basis.

They also forget about the power steering fluid.

Fulid is golden brown in color and may get darker with age but not black

When the fulid goes black it means the black rubber seals are breaking down and contimanating the fulid hence the black color.

You said you have installed new rubbers but the color is still going black. The following could cause this :

1 the quality of the rubber seal is poor , try another brand

2 other seals or flexible rubber hose if any in the system may be going so replace them also

3 from my experience with a toyota mark 2 clutch slave cyclinder, the cylinder bore inside was damaged due to age , rust etc. Inside of the cylinder the walls became ridged or roughed (instead of being smoothe) so any time new rubber seals were installed , the roughed wall inside the cylinder grdually damaged it resulting in fulid going black over a short period of time , then leaks and eventually complete failure.
This was discovered after several replacement of rubber seals, fulid types and pistons!!

To rectify this the cyclinder unit was replaced and no problems wrt fulid color or failure afterwards.

Hope this helps and keep us posted.

I flush out and change the clutch and brake fluid every 20,000km.

The power steering fluid is replaced every 40,000km.

So then it is quite possible that the rubber seal around the cap could be causing this
