Decided to do this today, so i thought i'd share it.
usually you wont have to do thins unless you feel the brakes start locking up when you apply the brakes hard.......but prevention is better than cure...
well the wheels dont have to come off, but if your car is low, or your wheels are small it would be better to take them off. please use proper car supports, and dont leave the car supported on a jack.....
tools i needed:
a piece of clean cotton cloth (old t-shirt will work fine)
a 12mm spanner or socket (would vary from car to car, since not all are the same)
small screwdriver or knife for prying.
pic below shows the brake caliper and rotor, behind the rotor are two lines, the one on the left is the hydraulic brake line and the one on the right is the ABS sensor wire.
the pic below shows the location of the sensor behind the brake assembly. the small bolt keeps the sensor in place, and it needs to be removed before the sensor can be removed.
this pic shows the sensor removed and how it looks from the side......a bit dirty.
now this is what really needs to be cleaned. this is the actual sensing part of the sensor. this is magnetic and can attract small metal particles, and the added normal brake dust causes it to get like this.
this is it after it has been wiped clean. no solvents, no water. just wiping it out....u can use water, but it wont do much to brake dust.
to re-install the sensor, just stick the sensor back in the hole, and run up and tighten the holding bolt.
pics of the rear ABS sensor. this sensor is a bit different because it has a slightly longer snout.....

this particular vehicle has rear caliper brakes, i will update the thread later in the month with pics of the location of the ABS sensor on a car with drum brakes at the back.
