cracked exhaust manifold

Postby acesinghit » November 11th, 2007, 12:33 pm

i need to get an exhaust manifold for a 2002 elantra 1.6 with compatible gasket. where can i find such or whom shall i contact on this forum?

in addition, why do manufacturers keep making cars with cast iron exhaust manifolds? It is so stupid as after doing much research, they cannot take "stress". my friend's 94' 323 still has its original exhaust manifold and im sure many of u guys here never changed yours either....so the few that experience cracks just have lemons or its a manufacturer's defect?

thanks

I think the Mitsu manifolds may fit as the elantra 'borrowed' alot of parts from the lancer setup

once it cracked, remember it would be prone to cracking again even if repaired...extractor time!

I think you should look at the root cause of the crack, probably leaning out? using Super unleaded gas? O2 or MAF or timing problem?

From my experience (or rather my father's), once one part off the exhaust fail, it will do you well to change the whole thing, from engine come back. On two separtae vehicles, I have noticed that once one part of the exhaust has gone, all the other parts start to go, one month is the piping, one month is the muffler have to patch, next month is a gasket leak.

Now, I would guess that the whole bloody thing was built to have the same service life of the whole system, so once one part goes, it is an indication that the other parts on the way. This is just my observation of my father's cortinaL 1.6 and Mazda 616, and his conclusion as he had the same problem with both (after about 12 years of ownership of each.

thanks for your replies folks but finding an extractor for a 1.6 elantra is like finding a rear disc brake setup with an independent suspension for my wingroad

whom shall i contact hook, dave, anyone?

would a mitsubishi 4g92 manifold/header work?

my elantra manifold cracked also, the heat just cruin the thing, my father welded it for me but if you want a permanent repair the best thing is to go and find another brand, because it is way to expensive and as you know difficult to locate that is why i restorted to welding it. Elantras are such beautiful cars but it is a pain to repair or update.

ok i got some info........there is a place down el socorro that sells hyundai/kia parts and they selling a used manifold for $800.

Life Wear Mufflers Ltd. in San Juan says they can weld it for you for under $450. and they can build an extractor setup instead which will cost about $1000.

I called N&M Morvant and they said they have the brand new manifold and gasket for about $1200.

So my question to you guys are, what is the better choice for me?

In addition, the extractors would require the removal of the heat sheild, what sort of effect that would have on my a/c condenser and radiator?

Thanks all...
