i so tired of hearin people talk about them half cripple 1.6L 20V toyota engines eh. oh gosh. OK they work half decent in comparison to the average 1.6 etc but for crying out loud. ANY turbo car that gets their ass handed to them by a stock 20V should be turned into landfill. people get this through your heads 165 HP BRAKE horse power not to the wheels and that probably wasnt even the most accurate reflection. The toyota 20V blacktop engines i've come across have NEVER been able to produce more than 145 to the wheels and the most EXTREEEEEMLY modified one i've ever seen has only been capable of 255 HP. go to your average benz bmw, subaru, or evo and you'll notice a power curve somewhere between 250 and 280 HP. and the cars that fall below that dont fall very far below. Toyotas with blacktops are just overrated cars because of the quad throttle setup and 20 valves. Quite frankly i dont see what all the jubilation is about.

EXACTLY my point. it is outclassed by just about everything on the road that's geared towards performance these days. therefore my question still stands... WHY OH WHY is the engine referred to in most circles as if it is the mecca of performance?

because like the b16a its has a high output for its displacement.
it is a good starting point for tuning if you want small displacement with enuff h/p
with proper tuning it can be a very nice n/a engine
