I would love to open up the Tomei regulators and see if they are materially different from the Chinese knockoff.

There is a high chance that it is inferior but I'm still curious.

The reason I ask is that as of recently, Tomei has been outsourcing a lot of its production and I'm not sure if they are even directly involved in the design.

Take for instance their headers/up pipes for the Subaru platform. The headers are the SAME as the ones sold by Kinugawa, Tomioka, GTSpec, RCM etc. I'm not talking about a copy, it's the identical header/up pipe.

What's the difference between the real Tomei stuff and the chiney replacement is the quality control. I saw chiney turbos with bad castings on the turbo wheel. But I know people making 300+hp with the same turbos. It's a hit and miss

I know people using Chinese regulators for years and the only problem was either the diaphragm or the gauge broke due to heat.

I do believe lately I saw what lance said on club wrx.

I saw this similarity myself some time ago. If you look on top of the mounting flanges you would even see the engraving.

Regarding the Chinese turbos, aside from the casting process, another issue seems to be the exhaust housing material. The ones on these turbos have a much lower heat tolerance than the housings used in respectable brands.

FP did a really nice video on this some years ago. Should be available on YouTube.

this link has some comparisons of GTR manifolds

from my experience, there are some good reengineered chinese products and some horrible ones so it is a hit and miss. The biggest issue i saw was materials and the welding which are not properly heat treated and crack once put in service. Also some are just chromed pipes and not SS.
