WTK - Scan Tool reviews (local)

Postby stealth » October 20th, 2014, 7:41 am

im considering investing in a good scan tool as a side line business....to support Asian/Euro cars.

Tons of them out there online such as launch x431, Autel, g-scan, carman etc.

However i would like to know some local reviews....which is best in terms of updates, functionality/accuracy, ease of use and of course cost....

any help would be appreciated

If you want to invest in a good scantool as a sideline, you need a tool that can do basic ECU coding and programming, in addittion to reading and clearing codes. Unfortunatley, neither the Autel 519 or Launch CPR 123 can perform this these functions as they are basic code readers. I have had severel scanners over the years and I would highly recommended the Launch Diagun, because of its price as well as its features. You can trouble shoot problem, code injectors, perform idle air-relearn, read and clear troble codes for all electrical systems. Also you get lifetime updates free. This cost around $5500 TT.
If you have more money to spend then go for the Aultel Maxisys Pro or the Carman VG, but the cost of these are in the twenty- thousand plus dollars.

"praise" your going into the more technical stuff with ecu coding and programming that deals with modifying ecu factory settings of the vehicle plus you have to know what you doing did you take a course or studies ,my two scanners both do what all vehicles owners want to know, why the check lights on ,rough idling, burning fuel (faulty O2 sensors ) ,live data ( most important) ,faulty transmission sensors, abs sensors, plus more. It clears check lights and diagnose the problems 100% with easy reading, plug in and know what's your problem, so all that expensive scanners the cheaper ones do the same thing with free updates ( the crp 123 ). Both cost me less than $300 USD.

I always respect the views and opinion of other and I never try to impose my way or the highway sort of attitude. Having said that, my view was not intended to offend Xplode or take away from his contribution. I believe in possitive arguments and possitive critism. I offerered my advice as a automoitve technician with over twenty years in the field as a senior technician. Yes I would agree that his scantool serves his needs, but my advice was for someone wanting to invest in a scantool as a sideline. You need a tool that not only scans OBD2/EOBD cars but also OBD1 cars as well. Does it make sense to read and clear a trouble code lets say for example E-Trottle and then have to send your customer by another person to do the idle air relearn? I am only sharing my experience with you all as I had made those mistakes before by purchasing code readers. Take it or leave it, but please do not personalise any attack on me.

So why not just spend $30USD on the scan tool for PC you get live data, freeze frame, clear fault codes, etc. May not get transmission readings and airbag but if you're a novice no sense digging up there. Its a good way to learn, monitor different parameters, see how different readings indicate certain things. They have decent customer service and very easy to use. Not fancy as what you got but suitable for most novices' needs. It works on most cars post 1998 jap and euro, does not work on diesels ie pick ups (as they aren't required to be compliant; so regardless of which system you chose its not gona work).

The more expensive systems praise suggested are pretty good for their prices too, I am a fan of the Autel MaxiDas in terms of usability but then that's a really expensive piece of kit for the hobbyist. When you start using the Dealer systems or those more expensive systems you get a greater appreciation for diagnostics yes you read codes and can clear them but the more comprehensive systems allow you to check various circuits, sensors, actuators in the vehicle giving a more precise diagnostic of the situation. Just remember the lesser systems just read the fault stored which is just a reflection of what the ecu thinks something is wrong, its usually accurate but in more serious instances maybe something upstream that needs to be rectified which would then allow that downstream sensor to read within its parameters and hence the problem would be rectified.

anyway point is learn on your own car before you interfere with other people who may be paying you and if its a business (and good at what you do) invest in the holistic one and learn to use it 'cause as a customer I'd feel sick if a man just went and press clear faults for $300 without knowing the exact problem.
